Triumph TR6 - wheel 'popping out'

I just replaced the rear springs and shocks. The table bushings are well worn but ok. No slop there.
When I press down on the fender, to check the stifness of the shocks, the wheel wants to "pop out" of the axle, and it returns to its normal position after pressure on the fender is released. The initial motion of the wheel is accompanied by a somewhat loud noise. Any suggestions?

I have this problem as well, I first noticed it while exiting the car. The pop is not loud, just loud enough to hear. I wonder if it is the tired shocks?

Hello Gents,

I suspect it may be dry and binding axel slip joints... the splines should be cleaned with a tooth brush, both internal and external and examined for excessive wear and if OK then reassembled with a liberal layer of moly grease. This should allow the splines to slide easily.... while all is apart check out the rear hubs for endplay and bearing roughness as well as the U-joint for binding and grinding. It is a Saturday Morning job and not too difficult if you haven't done it in the past.

Hi Bob,

I will post a few shots soon... I am waiting for new tires to mount to my Konig Rewinds... 205-70R15 Michelin Hydroedge tires that have been on order for five weeks now! When I get them mounted I plan to take a few more shots of the completed chassis before reuniting it with the body. Work seems to really get in the way of having fun with the TR. It has been a terrific project none the less.

Cheers, Rob

Bob et al,

I just got my tires after an incredible 7 week wait and mounted them on the Konig Rewinds. The SS exhaust is in place and , now that the photo shoot is completed , the body can go back on... I still hope to be out on the roads by late summer.

Cheers, Rob

Rob,
What is the red insulating tape on top of your frame? One of the TR6 guys here in Boise just saw this over my shoulder, wants to know about it, as he is at that point!

Hi Rod,

the insulating tap is a weather seal for door and window openings on house construction projects... seams like it will work well in this instance and is self adhesive too. The body floor pans will bed nicely into the three or more layers that I put down. I am using the standard aluminum shims and rubber discs on the body mounts of course... the discs were CNC cut from marine grade aluminum and the rubber discs were hole-sawed from conveyor belting. New gr8 hardware for the mounting bolts with a generous slathering of never seize. Here is another chassis shot.... the body is ready to go on it now at long last!

Robb, Purdy, Purdy Purdy. One caviot though. When you install your body you might find the tail pipes for that Falcon exhaust to hit the body. I, and others have found you can't tuck those mufflers up very high.So hopefully you won't have to redo them.
I am Jealous though!!
DON KELLY

Don, thanks for the heads up. The pipes and mufflers are custom built in my shop using primarily 304 stainless. The pipes are the stock 1.625" diameter while the cans are a copy of a Flowmaster design... accoustic cancellation chamber followed by "chevron" baffles but no mineral wool or other packing. They are about 13" long by 8.5" wide. The twin outlet pipes are 1.5" and drop slightly below the frame level to clear( hopefully) the rear valance. The clamping system of stainless was also fabricated and turned in the shop. I am anxious to hear it run.

Cheers, Rob

Now That I see a close view It looks like it is a heck of a better set up. I really like the attachment idea. I might have to find out were you got the cans or if you designed them and get a set.
DON KELLY

Rob, Nice wheels. What brand are they and where did you get them? If you don't mind, how much are they?
N I C E Car!!
Cleve

Hi Cleve,

thanks, I like them too. These are Konig wheels, 15 x 7, called 'Rewinds' and cost about $500 USD. They were found on Ebay and the center cap emblems were custom made on a CNC mill... or you can just get a set of center cap decals from the big three for about $12. The wheels come in a variety of finishes.

Cheers, Rob
