Triumph TR6 - Toyota 5 Speed conversion

For anyone who has done this conversion, is there supposed to be a gasket between the extenion housing and the front transmission housing? If so what source did you use? If not what technique of sealing did you use? Thanks.

Whose kit do you have Douglas?
DNK

Doug, if you are referring to the intermediate plate that fits between the primary transmission case and the rear extension housing, yes there is a gasket on each side of the intermediate plate. There is also a gasket that fits to the front of the primary transmission case with the front bearing housing and clutch housing/bell housing.

Do you know which specific W 5x series transmission that you have? If so, I would just do a search on "Toyota W5x transmission parts" and see what popped up. If you don't know which specific model, try a search on Toyota W series transmission identification.

Don,
I went ahead and got Herman's kit.

Steve the transmission is a W58 from a 1992 Non-Turbo Supra. Had to change out the shifter dog to make it work. To do that I had to remove the extension housing. This transmission has a STEEL intermediate plate that differentiates it from earlier models. Supposed (???) to be a bit more rugged.

There was no gasket there when I removed the extension housing, just red RTV; a lot of it. I have cleaned all that off, down to clean metal. It just seems to me that there ought to be a gasket between two mating metal parts. I've exchanged emails with Toyota Parts.com and they say "no gasket". I went to the local Toyota dealer who could not find a gasket for this model. There were gasket kits for Automatics but not for manual. Found one website that listed a gasket kit WITH the oil seals. Ordered it. Now to see what quality it is. Also found Timken seals at about 4x the kit price EACH so I'm concerned that I may be getting "made in China".

Danielson intimates that he used a gasket. Dane Wilson even lists the gasket kit part number, 04331-20050, and that kit pops up on a google search, but the dealer does NOT have that numbert!@!

Herman offers NAPA part numbers for the oil seals, front and rear and the Local NAPA store has one and can order the other, but no gasket. Says didn't have a gasket.

Just looking for some sage advice. Don't want to screw this thing up. Not with about $2K invested already!! I have a large tube of RTV, but would rather do it to OEM standard, whatever that is.

Hmmmmm, don't know what to say at this point. I based what is above on pictures from a workshop manual that showed a gasket on each side of the intermediate plate. I know that what I have is for a W5x series transmission with an aluminum intermediate plate as it predates the steel plate units. The steel intermediate plate versions are relatively rare compared to the others and may have been different but I have no definitive information on those.

I would give Hermann a call...be prepared to spend some time on the phone
DNK

Don,
Thanks. I'm awaiting an email response from Herman. He has lots more experience with earlier W58's. Should have the gasket kit in a few days. The OVERHAUL kit shows a gasket for each side of the intermediate plate Steve, but not separately part numbered on the parts diagrams I've seen.

Geez Doug, He's an old tymer.
Prefers phones .
DNK

Yeah Don...he's like you, even talks old...:-)

DOH!

DNK

Toyota conversion almost complete. Now to get it to mate up with the engine.

What's the latest word on the clutch cover question?
SteveP1

Steve,
The jury is still out. Awaiting Herman's advice. TRF has sourced a Luk, but the B&B derivative may be OK. I'll let you know the decision when done. Don't know why Herman does not include the PP in his kit unless it's just that many would already have the proper PP.
BTW, I will now have a stock TR 4 Speed transmission, less the shifter, available should anyone want/need one and a magic clutch kit, although Ron Nichols has first refusal on that.

Doug Baker

You gonna put that into the Mini?
DNK

Nah Don. The Mini has a 6 speed Automatic that works great.
I'd try to put it into the TR6 if I thought I could make it work.
