Triumph TR6 - Tie rod end removal

What method do you guys use to remove tie rod ends? A 2 lb sledge isn't doing the trick even with PB Blaster. The pickle fork I have isn't do anything either. I'm hesitant to keep on pounding excessively. I read in the archives about the 2 hammer technique, whatever that is, that didn't work either. Has anyone had success with a tie rod end puller?

I spray aound the taper with PB Blaster, put a little pressure on the joint by tapping a pickle fork, then use a propane torch around the steering arm and the rod-end pops out. Have a fire extinguisher at arms length.

A second method is to hold a large faced hammer on the back of the steering arm, and tap the opposite side of the arm with a second hammer. This will deform the hole in the arm enough to force out the rod end.

I have used both methods with success.

Don, Is that a dead blow hammer or a rubber mallet that is meant to bounce back into my forehead? Apparently, I wasn't doing the double-hammer technique correctly, so I'll try Peter's method first.

Metal hammers work best. Rubber hammers absorb the impact and negate the force. Wear forhead protection if that's a problem for you!

Success. Perhaps after 2 days of letting the PB Blaster soak in that helped. First side, I hit it a couple of times with the sledge and it popped out. For the other side I tried the double-hammer technique and it didn't work. I stuck the pickle fork in and after several hits on the bottom with the BFH it flew out. Thanks guys!

Well it's the weekend so I get to work on the car. Last week I installed the tie rod ends, but it wasn't like they just dropped in, they didn't line up that well. I tried to draw them up tight to close the gap, but not with a lot of luck. I really cranked down on the nut, but it's turning real hard and it doesn't seem to be closing up the gap. When I put the front back on the ground will that force the tie rod end down? Thanks guys.

I think it is a case of drop her back down on her wheels then do the final tighten.
