Triumph TR6 - New sound and feel

The other day I noticed a new sound from under the passenger compartment. In a short time it got worse. I drove the car around the corner the other morning and actually felt a clunk through the shifter. I only notice this at slow speeds 1st and into 2nd. All else feels right as far as clutch and shifting. I am thinking it is the universal on the drive shaft. I hope. I jacked the car up but because of the overdrive can not get my big paws up in there to feel the darn thing. Do I have to drop the exhaust just to see or is there an access thru the well from the compartment.

Hi Mike
Yes there is access from the cockpit...BUT you do not want to do that as it is too much of a hassle to get everything out and back in ( the radio plinith requires removal). Removing the interiour only gives you access to the front UJ of the prop shaft. You will still need to go under the car to do the back UJ. The shaft will require removal to change UJs. The prop shaft can be removed from below without dropping the exhaust system. I say this for single pipe cars and am not sure on dual pipe cars..what year is your 6?
You say clink... a single clunk or does it repeat? Does the clung frequency increase with road speed? Does it only occur with changing gears? Is it more noticeable as you turn a corner? A little more info required Mike. UJs usually do not go south that fast. Maybe you simply have loose nuts??? Maybe your dif mounting points have gone south???

The front prop shaft bolts are flattened one side and this "flat" rides on a "flat" of the shafts mounting plate. You only need a wrench (socket will not fit) to remove the nuts. Bolts will stay with the mounting plate. NOTE: on reassembly make sure the bolt head flat spot is flat against the mounting plate flat spot ( the 2 flats are against one another). These nuts are nylock nuts and should be renewed and with locktite.

well I took it to the shop on a trailer and lifted the whole car up with our fork lift to get under it. I love big toys. Dropped the exhaust (dual)out and sure enough it is the universal on the front end of the shaft. Got a new one from the local parts store. Installed and drove it home. I jacked the car up last night and put it on stands for the cursory exam. It was clunking pretty good when i turned the rear wheel here at the house. CLICK CLICK CLICK. I noticed while I was under it that there is a bit of gear oil dripping back from the bell housing. I guess i will be pulling things apart this winter to replace seals.

Sounds like the rest of the UJs need replacing.

If your rear engine oil seal is gone then you are in for a treat. Tranny will have to come out and engine supported. But then you get to look at the clutch assembly, thrust washers, oil pan gasket,............:)
When you do the rear UJs, have a very close look at the hubs.
Have fun
