Triumph TR6 - British Car Day

Yup
that time of year again for the BIGGEST all British car show in North America. Over 1200 British made vehicles. The only classes with new vehicles are Jag, RR, and Mini.
As usual, it is time to start to get the list together of Ontario drives to form the convoy.

Who all is going? The caravan route is same as last few years...Shelburne, Orangeville, Caledon, Brisbane, Georgetown, 25 and 5, then the park.
Contact me off line. I have a preliminary map and time schedule done.

I'll be there. What's another thousand miles for a round trip weekend ? Bronte Creek is the same weekend as British Invasion (featured marque is Triumph) in Stowe Vermont (100 miles from here) but I prefer Bronte Creek.

Don
Don Elliott

See you there.

I again have the first shift (8 - 10) at the entrant's gate. I'll be the one with the furry face and hat (little other sun block up there), and maybe white socks.

Well, I actually left to go attend the show, I am a new owner of a 1976 TR-6, and was looking forward to my first show, just had a tune up done by BritaniCar to be sure I was OK for such a drive...but an hour into the trip...a huge "BANG" came from the back and a subsequent grinding sound. The CAA tow truck driver and I seem to think it might be my differential..I'll find out tomorrow. If it is the differential, anyone have some suggestions on whether it is better to have my own rebuilt or purchase a rebuilt one?

Thanks for any tips

Lorna Lesser

Lorna I am 99% sure that you have a broken diff. mounting bracket,A lot of us have had the same problem and it is a very cheap and easy fix, Dont let the garage fix you up with a diff rebuild, look back over the last years threads and you will find lots of advice on this topic. good luck
Clive

Thanks Clive,
I have been scouring the internet today trying to learn a little more while the garages were all closed, I had read about the mounting brackets, but would that also cause the to wheels to momentarily seize up as mine did when the tow truck went to roll it back off the flat top bed? It really did have a horrible grinding sound goin on, I was lucky to have been able to get off the high way.

Lorna
No, broken dif mounts would not cause wheels to lock up in reverse.
There are many different things to look at. First off the clutch is not 100% eliminated here but you do not mentiuon anything about it so sounds like you feel sound is coming from the rear end. It could very well be the dif. It could be a broken u-joint. It could be a hub. Your only choice at this point is to get her up in the air and turn a back wheel by hand.
Good luck and let us know what you find out.
Sorry you did not make it to BCD. See you next year though. I know of a TR3A that comes from Montreal every year. Look up!

PS got third in class at BCD. Kinda disappointing. First place looked like was fresh out of the garage. Rims where ALL chrome. Must have been $10,000 in chrome under the bonnet. As my buddy put it " that is not how it came out of the factory". It seemed glitter ruled over originality this year. Saw the same thing in the Spitfire class.

Was really good to meet a few faces from this BBS.
Saw the new Lotus Elise...what a cool looking auto.

Great pics Rick,

Too bad about 3rd place. After seeing your car I believe you deserved better.

Nice meeting you by the way.

Is that a radar detector on the dash of the blue TR6?
Seems I've seen something like that before...In some kind of picture....Something about fast..Hmmm. Well maybe not.
HP Henry Patterson

Henry
Nope. Get caught with a radar detector up here and 3 things happen. First the cop makes you drive over it, then gives you a fine, then you automatically loose points off your licence.

Rick,

Yours is a slick six! How about more pictures...like the engine bay, interior, etc.? What springs did you use in the rear?

Mike
Thank you for your kind words. No problem on the pics. Give me a few days to put them up on the same site as above. Gotta get a few more days of driving in. Doing a fall colours tour Sunday with local club.

I am not sure what springs (stiffness)I have on the back. That part of the body off restoration was done when I bought the project. Sorry do not even remember the paint swatches on the springs. Front springs are green and blue.

Rick,

Look forward to seeing more of your car...you appear to be setting the standards for this forum...getting the factory paint swatches correct!!!!

My "no show" update for those who have asked:
As it turns out my Differential had to be completely rebuilt...my mechanic (I have only had the car for 6 months, have never done any major mechanical work on cars, and so this would not be a job I would want to tackle) pulled my differential out (while doing a show & tell for me) and let me the look at the insides...I had several cogs broken off the main gear resulting in several "chicklet" sized pieces floating around in the mechanism. My mechanic, a specialist in vintage British cars, had first told me that if my recent "bang and grind" was a problem with the actual differential, then that would most likely be because it had had the oil leak out and was running dry. Both he and the other specialists in the garage were surprised to see that I actually had a good level of oil in the diffenrential and that the mounts had been recently replaced. They now believe that the previous owner must have run the diff dry at some point, changed the mounts, filled the diff with oil (never even bothered to replace the original leather gaskets) and sold it really quick before the damage that was already done became their own problem.

Well, a thousand Canadian dollars worth of gears, bearings, and other differential parts later, I have learned an expensive lesson in TR6 mechanics.

Thanks everyone for the advice, I'm so glad I found this BBS.

Here is a couple of picture of my own TR6.

Offline send me your mailing address as I have some material regarding the All Triumph Drive-in we hosted this summer that I want to forward. Have tried several times to contact you but the e-mail is always kicked back.

That is a fine looking example of a TR6. Looks pretty clean.
I am curious about one thing. I see you have tripple webbers and am curious about the fuel filter. It looks like it comes through the fire wall from under the dash??...Yes?? One thing for sure, very easy to get at and change:)
Glad she is back on the road but OUCH!!

Hi Mike
How are you? My e-mail address works just fine when the AT and DOT are removed.....sorry:)
You have mail. Thanks. I look forward to receiving it.

Rick...

Is the steering wheel you have on your TR6 gem smaller in diameter than the stock version? If so, by how much, does it make steering a bear, who is the manufacturer, and where do I buy? You can guess that I'll be looking for more slide under entry / legroom. Ken

Rick,
Excellent! Now I'm jealous! My '73 looks even more like a work in progress! Under the bonnet is especially impressive and I do like the blue interior. I notice the car's stance...she "sits up" in the back...competition springs I bet. I used bpnorthwest HD road springs...the ride is sweet but she still "squats" a little at rest. Thanks for taking the time to share the additional pictures...I will spend quite some time pouring over the wonderful details. I know you are proud.

Malcolm,
No, the shot is going NW up county road 13 which takes you up(more like down if you follow the water flow) through the Beaver Valley. Stay on 13 and you go right past where I live in Thornbury. A very scenic route. A nice windy road with ups and downs. A must drive for this time of year.

Ken
The GRANT steering wheel I have measures 13.5" while stock is 15". No, I do not think it makes for difficult steering. I really have no experience with the OE steering wheel as I went straight to the wood wheel on my restoration. I have the OE wheel and the grip of the wood one is a thicker not to mention that looks a heck of a lot better....IMHO. I suppose it would make a difference to a tall person getting in and out of a TR6. This type of SW can be purchased from all auto supply including Crappy tire. I bought mine in Seattle WA on sale for $US99.00 back in 2000. The hub adaptor was an additional $50.00.

Above shows the wheels and adaptors but only ships to US.

Mike C
Thanks. I have thought she sits up a bit in the back end. I really do not know what springs are back there as this part of the restoration was done when I got the project. She also has OE shocks.

3rd doesn't do you car justice, but hey, i did'nt get to the table and i was a tad dissapointed..oh well, more to work on this winter and be ready for next year, might even have a GT6+ in the show too :-)

Thank you Bob.

I am quite surprised you did not win. From first last to nothing...does not compute! The voting this year was indeed weird.

I am jealous...a GT6. Drove one many times when I was 17. A friend had one and did not like to drive it...go figure.
Rick

Sorry,
that should read "From First place last year to nothing this year..."

No wounder it does not compute:)
