Triumph TR6 - 2nd Gear Is A Grind

Hi guys... on another beautiful fall colors run here in Ontario (Muskoka Road 13 - the Southwood Road for those who know this favourite twisty bike/roadster drive) I was reminded to ask this question:

When downshifting from 3rd to 2nd at about 20 mph or higher I get gearbox grinding. I have to slow right down to about 15 mph (less than 1500 rpm) to shift smoothly down into 2nd. Is this normal or a bad sign? All other up or down shifting is smooth and quiet.

No I don't have that problem.

The bad news is - it probably is an indication a circlip has broken or something is loose in the tranny Ken.
Michael Petryschuk

Hmmm... sounds like $$$$$$$$ Mike. I'll do some homework on that. I'm into Cullingford's on Tuesday for a new windshield and to pick up a turn signal switch so I'll talk to Brian. If it's tear down time it'll have to wait until 2011. A planed rechrome of the rear bumper will use the rest of the mad money for this year :(

Happy Thanksgiving!

I'd look around craigs list, there have been a few TR6 NON-O/D 4spds availible here for $75...may be worth it to find a donor and then take your time with yours while you still enjoy the car. Just a thought.

I had a simialar problem in June with a gearbox
i had rebuilt that came from a 70 that i had parted out.It got real noisy in 2nd,thus i had the 74 gearbox installed ( origional to the car ) and this one has a mild grind occasionly going into/outof 3rd.
This has allowed me to enjoy the car the rest of the
summer/fall while i decide to A. rebuild the better of the two i have over the winter or B. go the Toyota
5 speed coversion.
Cheers

Sounds like your 2nd gear synchro ring has worn. Does it slip into 2nd gear without any noise above 15 mph if you double de-clutch?
C J Norcott

No CJ... double c does not make a difference that I have noticed.

Ken
How's the new windsheild and what was Brian take on the shifting problem.
M Macdonald

Malcolm... will know later this week. I take the car in Tuesday. Will advise.

In wrapping this thread up until spring 2011 Brian Cullingford (for those who know this former BL Dealer and LBC service garage in Barrie, Ontario) suggests that I may have a worn synchro or excess play in the gear hub.

So, I'll put aside some coin, shift gently and store until then. I'm not up for getting into it on my own.

Thx guys.

Ken

If I can find the thread where we gabbed about swapping out a windshield I'll wrap that too. I just picked the car up this morning with a fresh one.
Ken Shaddock

Malcolm... sorry, did not respond to your question. The new windshield is a treat. Crystal clarity after looking through one that was delamming. Brian did a great install... clean. He charged $138 labour which I thought was reasonable. Glass cost was $199.61 plus glazing rubber and moulding cover.

JT and Malcolm... re buying another gearbox: I am one of those dimwits who'll pay $$$ to keep his car and drive train a matching numbers car. I know I'll never get my money back but sometimes I spend good money after bad... it's one of my guy things.

CJ looks like you were correct. I'll try double clutching again in the interim.

Have a look at the Buckeye Triumph Technical pages, there is a set of articles on dismantling and overhauling the TR 250/6 gearbox. You might be tempted to do it yourself. I have rebuilt a TR7 gearbox, it was not that difficult just time consuming.
