MG TD TF 1500 - Yet another newbie

Hello fine folk,
Since I have been lurking on here for a few months, I felt in high time to introduce myself.
My wife & I live in Kawartha Lakes, Ontario, Canada after retiring last year and moving from the Hamilton area. So nice to finally escape from the “rat race” and devote more time to a great hobby that is British automobiles.
Been into LBC’s for a number of years now and cut our teeth on restoring a ’67 AH Sprite. (still have).
Graduated to our ’55 TF 1500 two years ago and it was purchased from a very nice fellow in the Pontiac Michigan US area. He had done a full body/paint restoration in 2003 that is still in great shape.
The wife christener her “Sunrise” due to the undercarriage and inner fenders being painted red.
Records are a bit sketchy prior to 1970 but believe we are the 5th owners and she was imported into the Detroit MI area back in the day.
I’ve been spending time on mechanical issues, replacing anything that was rubber, synthetic or cork. (grin)
I find the tips and techniques here on the forum invaluable (specially the post from a while ago about pulling front wheel hubs) and I hope that I can reciprocate some ideas and thoughts as time goes by.
All the best,
Tim

Tim -- Greetings and a hearty welcome. As one who just spent a little over 4 years on a TF restoration, three years of which I was retired, I can appreciate what lies ahead for you and your TF.

I developed a web-site that documented the dismantling and restoration of my TF and you may find some of the postings helpful; although, be forewarned that I am not, and do not, represent myself as any kind of expert in these matter. The experts, as you have discovered, are graciously available on this BBS. My web-site can be found at: mgtf54.blogspot.com Once there, go over to the right hand column, scroll down to the 2010 postings, then go to "August", and then to, "A New Beginning...." The 2010 posts are primarily of the dismantling, and for all of the other dates the posts are for the restoration.

Cheers and good luck -- John

Tim,
Welcome!
Years ago (around 2000) I saw a TF with that same color sceam in Ada MI. at John Twist shop.
Hmmm wonder if your PO resprayed same color, or you have a twin?
David Sheward

Thanks guys,

Hi John, I'm the one who bought the full tonneau off you late last fall, I think :-)

David, you may be right. I checked PO's before/after pix and same colors. In 2000 it was owned by another gent from Port Huron MI who had it since 1970's. It appears to have left MI ended up in Fla for a few years and then transported back to MI in 2002 when the fellow I purchased from, bought it. (according to old docs I got with the TF)

Cheers
Tim

Tim,

Welcome, welcome!

I'm envious of your wire wheels and the four post lift! Lust is a better word.

The guys that lurk here are the best! You've come to the right forum.

Welcome aboard, good to hear about another T car out there. Folks who drive these should always be aware of this site as it contains unlimited information from its members. Nice car....

Tim -- OMG, you're absolutely right. I'm laughing at myself with reddened face. Well, in any event, my welcome to this BBS was no less sincere.

TF's been on my radar since age 3.
Black one's even more so. Dad's 1500 was black ...I spent a good part of my life trying to find it!
Still looking ...but with no numbers known makes it hard. Till then ..Izzy keeps a smile on my face.

Welcome Tim. Your car looks great.

Welcome and may you have a lot of fun with the car and the forum in the future ! I like the two tone paint job, makes the car glow from underneath.
Maybe the PO worked as a golden gate bridge painter...
And nice spacious garage

Tim,
Welcome aboard !!!!! You don't seem to be very far from the Peterborough lift lock,,, always wanted to get a picture of out TD next to it!!!

Thanks once again guys,

John, no problem, I had to think for a second or two as well. Thanks again for the tonneau, love it. :-)

Gene, the wife wouldn't give up her side of garage so our Sprite sits up top. (less coin than adding a 3rd bay to garage :-)) Just installed the new wire wheels as well as hubs. Originals were almost kaput. Right rear was really bad, splines looked like a rip saw blade.
It hurt the pocket book a tad but went 60 spoke chrome (from MWS UK) all around. Better safe now than sorry later.

Steve, you are right, Peterborough lift lock is only 40 minute drive from here. Funny, we live so close and havn't visited yet. It was the same when we lived 40 minutes away from Niagara Falls. Only visit things when friends from out-of-town come to stay. LOL

All the best
