MG TD TF 1500 - xpeg crankshaft turning

Noticed in the manual they do not advise to turn the xpeg crank. Is it because the crank is nitrided? If so small aircraft engine cranks have been nitrided for 60 years, and they turn them but renitride them after turning. Had one that had been turned twice.Nitriding is surface harding process.

I think I read that somewhere, but am not possitive.

They did the same thing with the mga twin cam crank. Early manuals give regrind sizes and later ones do not. So, I'd guess that was the loss of the tuffriding or nitriding. Also, the process wasn't as available then as now. I don't think it makes as much difference now due to better oils and bearing material.

I have heard the theory about nitriding as well as the theory that these cranks were highly stressed in the 1500 and twinkie applications, so if you took a few thou off of them, they would be too weak and would break. I'm not certain. Does anybody out there really know?

The twin cam "Engineering Technical Data" for the "crankshaft" says "Material: Steel AS.22.X." What does that mean? There's nothing on the page about "nitriding" of "Tuffriding."
