MG TD TF 1500 - XPAG or XPEG

I'm helping a club member replace the fuel pump on her 1954 TF (HDC46/3539, Original Engine XPAG/TF/33152). She has been told and believes that the engine is a 1500. The car does not have the 1500 badges. I looked for the badge and stamping on the block but, as you know, TFs do not afford easy inspection of anything in the engine bay. I'm a TD guy and this is my first time working on a TF.

The engine has the aftermarket aluminum coffin valve cover and aluminum tappet cover. I don't know if the aftermarket tappet cover is hiding the stamping on the block or if I'm just looking at the wrong place.

Are there any easily discerned external features that distinguish an XPEG from an XPAG?

Thanks.

ps: It's a truly beautiful car that was originally Dark Red but is now Old English (kind of creamy) White with light tan interior.

Hi Jud
The cast on number should be up the front just under the side cover
117
and the head should have 118 up the front

Also, I think there is a raised boss or fin from the rear core plug to the bell housing. The 118 is stamped, not a raised number. George

Thanks Willy and George. I'll be back at the car next week and will take a better look.

Good info in these two links:

FYI - My TF-1500 had a TC/early TD head when I bought the car. Since replaced with a "real" AEF118 head for TF-1500. So, check the block number and the head number.

Thanks Lonnie. Almost TMI but actually very helpful. Jud

Wednesday my buddy (he drives a TR^ so knows nothing about T cars) are going to replace the fuel pump in the TF. If I jack up the rear end and remove the wheel, will I be able to get to the pump?

Thanks.

Well, that didn't work. We could jack the TF up only about 10 inches - enough to get the wheel off but not enough to crawl way under to get at the pump and fittings.

Plan B: I got the TF started by filling the reservoirs with gas. It started right up and seems to run very good. We were able to back it back into the garage. The garage is at the bottom of a steep 300 foot curvy driveway so backing a trailer down to the car is not feasible but with the reservoirs full I can drive the car up to the street and load it onto the trailer.

We'll take it to my place where I have a tw0-post lift and get at the pump in relative comfort.
