MG TD TF 1500 - Wiring Harness - Fog Light

All the original wiring on my TF has faded to the same colour. Could one of the experts out there please tell me where the negative wire for a front fog light exits the wiring loom. I suspect it might be somewhere in the area of the horn wires

Mine was by the starter (red w/yellow trace).
This might have been cut back by PO.
I ended up re-wireing my "aux" switch through some "pre-select" switches so I could operate Fog / driving lamps seperatly as well as a hunting lamp and some others. Made up a little pannel that attaches to dash suport rails for this. My lamps can also operate as turn signals as do my "1500" reflecters on the rear of the tub. (up higher than the stock turn signals!)
Contact me off line if you would be intrested in the details and I can send some pix. Works quite nicley and drilled no holes in the dash to get some "extra" functions and fusing in the car.

Mine was an unused snap connector in the bunch of wiring attached to the right radiator stay bar, just forward of the front air cleaner, near the right front hood latch.

Oops, and like David's, it is red with a yellow trace. We both have LHD cars if that makes a difference.

I believe all the TDs and TFs originally left the factory with the red/yellow fog light wire attached to the steering rack housing with one or two aluminum straps. It was doubled back over itself with an insulated connector on the end of the wire.
As I remember, it is shown in either the Owners Manual or the Shop Manual.

Last weekend I found the end of the orginal "AUX" wire sticking through the bulkhead on the left side where the main loom exits. I think you are right as a PO once had a switch panel fitted for two extra lights and could well have removed most of the original wire. However. the Workshop Manual diagram shows it running down the right hand side.

John, one thing you forgot and that is that the wiring diagram in the Shop Manual is actually a SCHEMATIC and shows the way the wires are connected and NOT how they are ROUTED. If the wiring harness on the left side of the chassis looks like it has been disturbed from original, then the wire might have been stripped from it. If not, then parts of the wire segment may still be wrapped in the harness. In any event, a new wire from the stub you found up to the front of the car is called for.

Or two wires if fitting with 1 fog lamp & 1 Driving Lamp! A common pratice at the tyme was to run 1 of each. This is the set-up I have on my TF. I use my "AUX" switch as a master "ON/OFF" for a group of 4 "pre-select" toggles that allow me to decide what lamps come on with it.
As John and I have disscused off line...operating a "driving lamp" at the same tyme as a "fog lamp" renders the fog lamp useless as the driving lamp is too bright!

I have built up a five wire harness for both headlights, (1 dip and1 main each) and one red/yellow wire for a driving or fog light via relays. As I don't want to install extra switches on the fascia I'm not sure whether to use the SLR 576 or SFT 576 I inherited with the car. Having already fitted a battery isolating switch on the bulkhead in front of the driver, I'm now debating whether to connect the new harness to the permanently live or starter switch terminal on the isolating switch.

The other thing you could do would be to "split" the "aux" wire at the front of the car using a dual connecter butt splice plug. That way you could unplug the driving lamp in case of heavy fog. I live in a valley near a lake where fog is quite common. I run amber lens in my lamps amd most of the time have both on durring dusk hours (just for visability). The close spacing on a "T" and amber lens get me noticed as it looks quite unusuall comming down the road. I find some "SUV CELL PHONERS" will actuallly wait before pulling out or turnning in front of me just to see what the heck is comming down the road! Sounds like you are encountering that "unfused" lamp circuit I spoke of off line...IMHO....adding a fuse to the circuit is not a bad idea. My lamps still operate through the key switch (as orginial) but they are fused now to prevent wire loom "melt-down" in case of a short.

Good idea David. I'll fit both lights as you suggested and add an in-line fuse. With four seperate power wires to the headlights I don't think fuses are needed.
