MG TD TF 1500 - Wingard/lucas mirror for MGTF 1500

It was a real relief to see Frank Cronin's pictures on the site. Having bought my car in pieces I now have a much better idea on how to handle the little details of putting it back together. Unfortunately when you buy in pieces there is always the question of do you have all the pieces. Looking at the picture http://www.mg-cars.org.uk/mgtf/Pictures/TF9052/TF9052_312.jpg I find that I cannot just buy one of the moss replacements since the 1500 had a unique wingard/lucas patent mirror. Now I need help finding one. Is anybody familiar with this mirror and know what other British cars may have used it? Better yet anybody have one in their spare parts bin???

Bob, you might try this site, they have an exterior mirror that has a similar base, and actually sell different stems. http://www.texautomotive.com/

You will have to look under their "classic" in the dropdown menu.

Checked it out but not the right stuff. I need to keep looking and hoping that something turns up. Thanks for your input.

Moss Europe sells the early Lucas type round mirrors, left and right handed, (flat or convex glass) with a fixed stem that bolts through the wing at £14.70 each.
I bought two of these to replace the single L.H. mirror on my TF1500 that came back from California in 1992, the pattern was almost identical.

Bob, I helped restore a fairly virgin TF1500 (#7613) in the 80s, and it had the usual Desmo mirror on the dash. So not sure if a later change or owner changed? George

I'd love to find one of those day/night mirrors that would go into a TD. Bud

Bob, TF 9140 had the day/night mirror. image is from Feb 1987.

For 1500's that have the mirror missing and to keep the base foot print correct we have machined a round base, fitted it to a Desmo mirror stem and chromed it.

I am not sure but Jaguar XK series may have had them.

My TF1500. TF8926 has the day/night mirror
And I believe it to be original

Rod,

Not sure but is this the mirror you were referring to that you can modify the base??
A Lucas 584 or 585 seems to look similar but of course the base needs to modified. Bob

Yes we chrome where the gold finish is. I think its the closest you will get to an original.
Rod Brayshaw

Rod, I found an XKE mirror at a USA parts supplier and ordered it today. I will just need to make a base which does not seem too hard. All in all may be an easy solution for not having an original mirror and it will be a day/night variety besides. Thanks everyone for your inputs. Looks like we found another detail that was not common knowledge.
R Brown

Bob, how long is the XKE mirror? Bud
Bud Krueger

I honestly don't know but will measure it when it comes and let you know...

My TF #7157 built on 22 Sept 1954 does not have a day/night mirror, but I have no idea if it is the original mirror.

Is there any reason why you cannot disassemble this mirror and fit the STD TD ball and shaft fitting to it? It looks like the socket shape is already there? So TD drivers can have a dipping mirror as well?
As a safety issue I don't have a problem with that.

When you get the mirror Bob could you take a look perhaps?

Rod Jones and Bud,

I have received the JAG E type mirror from engle imports and started to disassemble it so I can make a new stem to fit my TF similar to the one found on TF9052. The mirror is a day/night mirror measuring 5x2.25 inches with a 1/2 inch ball fitting into a depression on the back of the mirror. Hope this helps.

Thanks to Bob Brown's find - here is the XKE mirror on Lazarus. Wasn't very difficult once I saw that the part that holds the TD's mirror into the mount is a 7mm x 1mm screw device with a flat edge. The only piece that I needed was 7mmx1mm x 30mm screw plus a brass 6-32 screw, flat washer and nut. Bud
