MG TD TF 1500 - What is this?

I have no idea what this is. (two images)

Opened.

Tim-
That obviously is a Lucas smoke storage pot. Once the various bulbs collect some of the electrical smoke, they are placed and stored in the pot for future use.

Or?

That's pretty Harry Potteresque. :-)

If you don't want to use your smoke collection pot you can always get a replacement bottle.

Purely a guess - since the light output is not desired
(sealed can) - I will suggest the lamps are used in
Series with a load of some type to limit the current
As a protective device. Such lamps are called
Ballast lamps. Typically they have a low resistance
At normal current flow but under a fault current
The filament heats up and the resistance goes
Higher to limit the current.
No idea where this was employed

Lucas spare bulb holder??? Just a guess

There appear to be three additional holes for smaller, bayonet type bulbs. Could it be just a storage container for bulbs? There doesn't appear to be a way to connect wires to the base holding the bulbs. The numbers stamped on the bottom are 60001A preceded by by what looks like a peace symbol and BC9.

David is right. Lucas made these for use on many older vehicles.

But I like the smoke answer better. :)

OK I tracked down the part number (I entered it incorrectly in my initial search. The A was hidden under a blob of paint) It is a Lucas Bulb case. Evidently for storing spare bulbs.

Here's an explanation:

It is for spare lights bulbs and fuses, my is mounted under the hood by the fuel pump just like TW posted.

I'm still looking for the tea pot that has been posted before.

G.D. was this sold as an aftermarket or dealer added option? It appears to have been mostly on MGAs (according to a Google search). Have you seen any literature or website that shows it mounted on a TD or TF?

It was simply an accessory you could buy to hold spares. Some vehicles may have been equipped with them as standard - Aston Martin and Bentley come to mind - but you could buy them for use on any car.
Steve Simmons

According to this guy they were mandatory in Europe at one time.

Roy & Kevin as you both seem to appreciate Lucas smoke I thought you might enjoy this image of some being released. I should have noted the name of the owner who reported on this site that no damage was done as the smoke was captured in time & replaced in the storage jar. Cheers
