MG TD TF 1500 - Water Pump

I met a fellow at a show recently who said that he converted his TD water pump from a standard 3 vane to a 4 vane and improved the water circulation and thus the cooling.

Truth or hoax?

I have been running a Bruno 6 vane (brass impeller) for over 12 years purchased from Mike Goodman (Goodman Motors in CA.)
I have been very happy with it, as well as the excellent service I recieved from Mike.

The TF had considerable "heat issues" when I first got it. (Vapor-Lock).
Did some research on this BBS and followed much of the advise posted on the subject. Problem is ...I pretty much did "everything" at once ...so it's a bit hard to determine "what" was best at curring the heat problem!
Carbs rebuilt
Rubber fuel lines replaced with braided stainless
Dizzy rebuilt
pertronix installed
Waterpump replaced
Exhaust Jet-Hot treated

Result is I rarely see temp gauge go over 80c...(cofirmed with digital "point & shoot" meter.)

My water pump on my TF went out about the same time as David's, and on his advice I switched over to the Goodman pump. The pump has performed quite well for me. Also switched to the MGB plastic fan, and added "Water Wetter". Now cooling is not an issue.

Hello Mort. The orignial pumps have 4 vanes. I have seen a pump recently that had a cast iron 6 blade impeller. To my knowledge Clover machine started making bronze water pumps with 6 blade impellers about 25 years ago. They are no longer making these. Recently I have seen on e-bay a water pump with a plastic 6 blade impeller. Some of the new pump castings are not machined correctly and do not clear the timing case cover. So if you get one of the new pumps check that it fits before you need to change it on the road then find out that it doesen't fit.
The orignial pump seals are no longer available, so the pump bodies need to be machined to take a standard seal. Not really a problem, it's done all the time.
I am happy I have a pump with a 6 blade impeller. I didn't overheat going thru Las Vegas at 115 degrees. Although with the engine heat it was hot driving that way.

Not for sure the "history" on the Bruno pump ...but as I understand it ....these were made for racing. I was assured it would be the "last" waterpump I would ever need for the TF. I did have the orginal rebuilt and it has mostly "lived" in the boot as a spare.
(It did run for a few 100 miles as a "roadside loaner" for someone untill he got his repaired)

So far it looks like the Bruno will be my "last pump"...but I have been on my "last leg" since 71! LOL

David,
Thanks for the heads up. I assume you are talking about the water pump article.
Although my water pump is working with no leaks or problems I am always interested in anything that will improve the cooling on my engine.
Yes, I know many of you feel that the engine is already over-cooled and none of this is necessary, BUT with all the modifications (supercharger, etc.) it does run hot at sustained high speed driving(70-75 on Tpke.).

BTW .. The rest of the parts arrived yesterday and I will now commence to replace the rear suspension (springs, shock bushings, etc) and put in the 4.55 rear. This should lower my rpm's at speed and hopefully lower the engine temp at sustained speed.

That's the one ...found it interesting in that they did not "upgrade" to 6 vane. Wonder if they offer that as an option or not?
