MG TD TF 1500 - Vokes air cleaner - parts available?

I'm looking for the air cleaners of the vokes air filter. Until now without success.

Any hints are welcome.

Bela

Did the pre owner dismantled the rubber rings of K&N filters?

Bela

Moss Motors in the USA lists them in their catalog.
Jack Long

Aren't the Vokes air cleaners MGA parts?
Gene Gillam

Bela, There is a front and rear Vokes air cleaner for a TF. The front is angled and vented, the rear is straight and no vent. As stated earlier, you can get them from the various suppliers. PJ
Paul161

They are different Gene. The TF has angled back plates to follow the body lines along with angled inserts and the metal screen has round holes instead of the diamond pattern found on the MGA

mmh

the filters in my car seem to be a little bit different.

The left one is deeper and has a hose to the valve cover. The other is flat and actually without an appropriate air cleaner.

The both moss types 372-175 are equal.
Bela

The pictures shown above look to be an MGA cleaner as the cover is flat and it has the diamond pattern metal screen. That is what I made the grille out of on this.

MG LaVerne

One of mine has round holes and the other has diamond shaped holes, though different from the grill on that image. As far as I know, you can buy a complete repro Vokes filter but not just the filter element or screen.

There are two original sets on USA ebay right now.

Hi Tom

I'd found only one.

Nice job Laverne.

I think that looks like Bob's Grandfather.

As far as I know, the originals had the punched round holes in the screen and the repos have the diamond shaped expanded metal screen. PJ

All of this air clean talk got me curious, so I had to go look.
My car has most of it's original parts (best I can tell) and my Vokes cleaners are marked as follows:

Front - D47937 SS1

Rear - D47938 SS1

And they both have the round hole screens.

Any help?

Find image of my Vokes air filters on my '55 TF 1500. I believe that these are original. The backplate on the TF is angled per LaVerne's comment. The trick for the TF is removing the front air cleaner. I remove the bolts at each end of the top of the side panel, insert a wedge each end, large wedge at the cockpit end and and small wedge at the radiator end, to increase the room for removal and out they come. Similarly the Carb can also be removed by this simple process. Owners often struggle with removal of the air filters and carbs but this simple process works. Obviously don't wedge the side panel too far and damage it

I'd found the 3 items. I'm still searching only the cartridge? as a spare.
Bela

One of 3 that I took to Reno, Gord :-)

I made a special wrench to remove and install the air cleaner bolts on the back. I can remove and install mine without disturbing the side panel and not touch it. Not a piece of cake, but doable. PJ
Paul161

Paul,

I'd love to see a picture of your special wrench. I use an offset screwdriver on the slotted front bolts to get them started but they are still really fiddly. Removing the float bowl vents helps give a little extra room.

Jack
Jack Long

Jack, I'll have to get a picture of it. Nothing special, just took a metric open end wrench slightly smaller than the bolt head, ground it out to fit, shortened it up and it works. PJ
Paul161

I'm still searching.

K&N E-3200

http://performanceparts.com/part/KAN/E-3200

may fit to the bigger one. Its height is 2 inches. But I need an additional with 1 inch height. K&N doesn't have this size.
Bela

you should read the excellent post by David Sheward. He made his filters by cutting a large K&N filter. Search for "K&N e-3310" in the archive. Use the "this phrase" search. There is also a lengthy discussion of TF filter solutions. John
JR Mahone

Hi John

thank you so much - very helpful!
Bela

I guess for cutting into two parts the KA-1100 is the best solution for my filters.
Bela

Jack, check out air cleaner wrench-Volks in a recent post; PJ
