MG TD TF 1500 - Vapor lock

My TF is suffering from vapor lock on long drives on hot days. Does anyone have a contact for a current supplier of a heat shield. Archives show that Geoff Love had a good solution severel years ago but I get a mail failure using his old URL. I'd sure appreciate some input. It's getting a bit embarrassing trying to re-start on hot days.

John,

I have consdidered getting a heat shield when my rebuild is complete. I haven't seen any but the T ABC site has technical information on making one which seems to be adaptable. Horst Schacht's book also has information on a heat shield. Here is the TABC link:

good luck,

John,

Suffered vaper lock just yesterday. Using a 9/16 open ended wrench, remove the gas line leading into the rear carb. If you have an electronic fuel pump, turn the ignition on long enough (couple seconds) to get fuel coming thru the line. Probably should use a coke can or similar device, to catch fuel. Otherwise, you may have fuel in places that you don't want it. This procedure will purge the fuel line of air which has resulted from the fuel boiling in the line thus causing vapor lock. Re-attach the fuel line and attempt to start your engine again. It should start without further problems. This works for me.

Make sure you have the correct higher pressure fuel pump. Spewing raw gas/vapor around a hot manifold over the starter and switch does not seem too good an idea to me, unless you want to torch yourself and/or your car.
Consider insulating/wraping the copper fuel line from the bend upward to the flex hose- it gets blasted by air blowing over the exhaust manifold/pipe. A good parts store/racer supply would have something. Also the heat sheild, as well as insulating the float bowls- have seen that somewhere also.

Hello, John.

Here's my new e-mail address. I canned my web site. Total waste of time
and money

I think I have one heat shield left. I'll let you know in a day or so.

John - I tried to e-mail you some information on the heat shield that I used on our TD, but it came back undliverable. If you will e-mail me direct, I'll get the info off to you. My experience has been that the vapor lock usually forms in the passage between the float bowl and the jet, making a heat shield the only way to correct it. Good luck - Dave

John,
I also tried to send some info to you from your email link....same problem (undileverable).
If you email me direct...I will forward it to you. Suffered through vapor-loc & high operating temp last year..............no worries this year.............so far!

A question....When purchased my TF had rubber fuel lines on the carbs...(have been changed to stainless now). Another owner told me there seemed to be a direct connection to running rubber lines and vapor-loc problems. Anybody else out here ever have this experance? I changed so many things at once last year ...it's hard to tell what one thing had the most impact on my problem!

John,
Five or six years ago I had the same vapor lock problem on my TF-1500. I purchased and installed a heat shield and braided stainless steel hoses from Brown and Gammons and have not had a problem since. However, I have heard others who claim the heat shield did not help much. Brown & Gammons still advertises their heat shield in the monthly Octagon magazine.

Thanks for all the comments. My URL has changed and I didn't update the data base. It's done now. jmflanagan2000@yahoo.com
