MG TD TF 1500 - Underdash Panel Spec.Washers

Hi All.

On TFs (and possibly TDs) the washers under the Phillips Head setscrews are particularly unusual and rare in form.

On TF9052,Frank Cronin's various photos depict one of the washers in discussion under the head of the setscrew holding up the underdash panel.

Also a photo of the same type of washer is evident under the head of the slot headed bolt which is on the outside
of the rear most hood bow cloth. One each side of the hood for a total of two(2).

Does anyone know of a supplier of these specific type
of washers? Otherwise,I will have to have a die made up for stamping them out.

Cheers for now.

Rob, Is this the washer in question? PJ

Paul,

On the Gallery section of TF9052(The Original mgtf midget)photo nos.242 and 314 depict the washers in question.

They look pretty much the same as your photo?

Their called "Flange Finish Cup Washers". Most come in Stainless Steel. Easy item to get. PJ

OK. Now that we are on to finish washers, can you find the ones on the TD dash?

Note that the sides are straight and not curved like modern or normal finish washers.

Christopher Couper

You can get those Chris in stainless, but their a billet washer with non curved angled sides and not highly polished. You can also get the billet ones in aluminum, but would have to be plated for the proper finish. Not sure of the sizes. Don't know where the stamped ones can be had. PJ

The ones that Chris shows on his dash should be available from McMaster-Carr at http://www.mcmaster.com/ or MSC Industrial Supply Co. at http://www.mscdirect.com/ Cheers - Dave

Thanks Dave. The MSC still looked too round but the McMaster one looks promising and you can get them in nickel plated too.

I will add this to the TD site for those wanting to be more original than what you can get at the big box stores.

Hmm. Bad copy/paste job.

Check out EBay item 171331941926 for the dash finish washer and item 120600268802 for the flanged finish washer. They both look very close. John

Rob,
Flanged Cup Washers are available from Classic Fasteners here in OZ in 6 and 8 gauge in Stainless Steel and Brass Nickel.
Would be a better choice than cup washers as they don't cut in the hood fabric or the under dash material.
Regards Robert.

Hi Robert,

Thanks fo the info re Classic Fasteners.I will peruse their catalogue.

I now also need to determine whether the flanged finish washers are the same size that hold down the rear most
hood cloth material onto the top tacking wood rails.

Hope you are enjoying that TD restoration.

The McMasters still look the best I think and are of the same pressed type and can be had in stainless or nickel plated brass.

The link only gets you part way there. It has to have the countersunk search term so try this:

This is the same page I've found with the earlier links. But does anybody know which of the many countersunk washers listed is the correct original size? Is it 1/4"? I guess the material was nickel plated brass but perhaps stainless would also do. It seems they were used with wood screws originally however a machine screw (with the correct slot head on early TD's & Phillips on later cars, with a wing nut at the rear) is a better bet for ease of subsequent dash removal. Hi Chris,

I gather you mean the McMaster flanged washer is a little more spot on for the TD Dashboard?

However, regarding the TF,I have five(5) original flanged washers from the ongoing restoration of the TF1500.They
look almost the same as the Classic Fasteners flanged washers in shape and form. The 1500 was quite an original car and had these in place on the underdash frame before I stripped everything off.

The TD Dashboard McMaster type washers seem to have straight sides as you have already indicated, the TF Underdash washers are a little bit more curved. I suspect
the TD Dasboard washers were different in form originally compared to the TF application.

Cheers for now

Rob. No. I stole your thread and it turned out McMasters actually lists both washers on the same page.

The TD dash uses the standard washer without the flange. But the sides on both are flat and not curved, and that's what makes them interesting from a T perspective.
