MG TD TF 1500 - Two car trailer car hauler

I'm interested in acquiring a trailer suitable for hauling my TD and my MGA (or, perhaps, two TDs) at the same time. I see on the I-net a 14,000# trailer at 40 feet for about $7K. 14K# is overkill but would certainly handle two MGs. I have a 2011 F-150 (302 V-8)factory rigged for trailer hauling so I don't think the weight would be too much of a challenge but I know nothing about trailers and hauling cars.

I'd like to use it to go from S.C. to the Mitty at Road Atlanta and to Jax Fla for Christmas (about 410 miles) and I think that would be the longest trip I'd probably go.

Does anybody know anything about trailers? Can one rent trailers? Any and all input will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks. Jud

A few years ago we checked into renting a U-haul trailer. The ramps/supports had a L shaped inner lip that made them too narrow for the track width of a T-series. Don't know if they have them for two cars. Worth a look.

Jud, I've pulled a lot of trailers from the East coast to parts all over the US and back, the one thing that would concern me is the 302 engine and the lighter transmission they hook up to them. I made a couple of trips pulling a 12000 lb load with a Chevy 350 and the rebuilt transmission had to be rebuilt again after the second trip as the new torque converter went out. The weight of a 40-foot trailer and two cars on it would be taxing your truck to the limit on flat ground. I-20 is hilly in some areas, I've run it many times from Florance SC to Birmingham Alabama and to here in Oklahoma. Personally, I would only pull a shorter trailer with one car on it. It's nice that your truck is set up for pulling trailers, but it's not set up for pulling that kind of a load. A lot of farmers here have 40-foot round bail hay trailers and none use anything lighter than a 3/4 ton, mostly one-ton trucks, never saw a 1/2 ton hooked up to one. PJ

Boy do I have the trailer for you. Only your on the wrong end of the country. Lol. I have a 53 x 102 Pace Gooseneck. 48 side door, ramp door with stainless accents. Checkerboard vinyl flooring, with a beaver tail at the ramp door for low profile vehicles. Triple torsion bar axles, aluminum wheels. 5k generator, air compressor w/ hose reel, fluorescent interior lights, four 500wt flood lights (pit lights), LED marker and tail lights, 28 curbside awning, large BC fire extinguisher,
Asking $10k. Seller motivated. Loosing my storage space.

I should have read the OP’s post entirely. Your F 150 is way too light for what your looking to do Not just suspension wise but also peer output. To pull these type of trailers you need a 1 ton dually as an absolute minimum with a diesel or big block power. My Ford dually pulls it just fine...

Thats a heck of a deal for somebody Bill but wow! 53 ft? I also agree about the tow vehicle.

As far as renting trailers? You could try a dealer that sells them. I know they do rentals around here. Chances are very good they won't let you tow a trailer any bigger than what would carry a couple of atv's. Minumum requirements for a single car hauler are usually 3/4 ton p/u or better. I have 20 x 8 1/2' enclosed car hauler that I tow with a GMC 6 liter gas 3/4 ton P/U. It will take it down the road a fast as I wanta go. Mileage drops to about 7 or 8 mpg running at 75. I wouldn't want to tow anything much bigger with what I have. If I did it often I'd want a diesel.

A 3/4 ton Ford F250 with a 6.2 gas or the diesel will easily pull what you want. a 35ft trailer behind and you wont even notice the pull, mine is4 wheel drive XL . at about 65 pulling the trailer about 13-14 MPG. higher speed, less gas mileage. the 250 is a nice riding vehicle.I love mine.

I totally agree with the posts on the size of your pickup. I have a 2014 Ram with a 395 hp hemi, and pull a 16 x 7' enclosed with a TD in it. Wouldn't even consider trying any thing bigger without a bigger truck.
I work part time as a truck driver for a company with 2 1 ton duellys with diesels. We have a 26' goose neck and they handle it well with a heavy load.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I've concluded that this is a bad idea poorly formulated. Not only that, but I'd probably not use the thing more than once a year. I think my best bet, when the occasion arises, is to rent a 20 foot box truck for one car and use it to pull a single car trailer. Even that might be too much for an inexperienced truck driver. An even better solution might be me driving my truck with a single car trailer and my friend following in his Ram 2500 pulling a second one car trailer.

Again, thanks for the "get that guy back to reality" comments.
