MG TD TF 1500 - Turn signals

Hello,
I recently bought a 1952 MG TD, which is still on its way to my home from the USA. To be roadlegal overhere I have to fit turn signals. Is there a proper way without to much disturbing the original appearance of the car? Thank You for any advice in advance.

Hi Frank. I have just purchased a 1952 TD and mine has been converted by utilising the front side lights and the rear brake/side light cluster. The indiactor switch is mounted centraly underneath the dash. In the UK you also have to have an indictor in the car showing that the lights are working.

Any ideas on how do I correct my address? as I wish to correct it from USA to UK!!!

Hi Frank

It is possible to convert to a TF system, you will need a "Flasher can" and a relay DB10 this is a component that can be purchased from S-V-C in Stafford (UK)they are on the Internet, I think they will also sell the flasher can.

Get hold of a TF wiring diagram, you will also need double pole lamp holders inside the original sidelights or fit extra lamps.

The warning light fits into the centre of the dash panel, I will send pic of mine if you want a guide

The conversion is easy and not difficult to hide. There is no way to tell you have turn signals except for the indicator light in the dash and the turn switch. I recently saw a TD with a lucas turn switch that had a built in light in the middle of the knob. Pretty neat and no need to drill a hole or alter the dash panel. While it was not original, it is period and it looked appropriate

You can use all 53 parts (front park light sockets, wiring harness, flasher, switch, relay, indicator on dash). Optionally you can hide some of this under the dash (flasher and relay) and use a small toggle switch that is black. I don't have a indicator light as the king of the road bezels on the top of the parking lights provide that feature.

You can also use the ignition warning lamp as the turn signal repeater inside the car. I did this for a 52 TD with the dash mounted headlamp dimmer switch. I used all of the late TD parts. The wire harness was a special one that Moss sold. The conversion is just a matter of relocating some wires, and disconnecting one at both ends. The ignition warning lamp will no longer function as a dynamo warning lamp, but you've got an ammeter to do that.

I wanted a signal installation for my '51 TD which did not involve any additions to the dashboard and saw an interesting system at last year's Hershey meeting in the US. It's an electronic control box mounted on velcro strips under the dash with a small 3 way toggle switch discretely mounted on the gear lever so nothing is visible inside the car. I replaced the regular single filament front parking light bulb holder with a twin filament and added a pair of neat chrome lamps (from Vintique INC) for separate rear indicators. These are mounted on rear splash apron and are very effective. The result, a very effective and unobrtusive installation.

Forgot to add the name of the supplier of the signal kit - Ron Meister, Cleves, Ohio. Be happy to supply his contact details to anyone who is interested.

Hallo folks,
Thank You all for Your efforts. They are all usefull to me. I am surprised by the amount of answers. I will go for a non visible installation with the rear lights working three ways and double filament sockets in the parking lights. The wiring looks complicated, but solvable. Thanks again Frank
