MG TD TF 1500 - transPacific

Gentlemen:

Could I get some advice please. I am contemplating a trip across the Pacific to the USA in September and would like advice on what I should see. The purpose of the trip would be taking a granddaughter to Disneyland but I should have some time available when that is done. As you might expect, I have an interest in classic cars but advice onother unmissables would be also appreciated. I have wandered around some of the country previously so am confident I can find my way around. I would fly into either LA or Dallas initially and if Dallas move down to LA when the family came over. I am considering going over to Washington to the Smithsonian as a possibility.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Bill,

As far as auto related, I haven't been but I am told the Peterson Museum in LA is well worth it. If you get up to Seattle the Lemay Museum is excellent. If you make it to the East Coast make sure you visit the Simeone Museum in Philadelphia, one of the world's best collections of sports racing cars with some amazing history. Simeone has everything from step-down Hudson stock cars to the fastest ever Porsche 917 and the very first Cobra Daytona coupe.

Hi Bill,

In California: Drive up Highway 1 from San Luis Obispo to Monterey, and beyond. Walk across the Golden Gate bridge. Yosemite Valley should not be missed: nobody forgets their first sight of El Capitan. Take your time.

The Smithsonian will take only about 3 weeks. Been a dozen times and haven't seen it all. If you like warbirds, tne USAF musem at Wright Patterson AFB in Ohio is great.

Ditto the Petersen museum in LA. Every time a have a couple of day layover with a different crew member I drag him there. They've never been disappointed.

The La Brea Tar pits are just across the street and a good take as well.

If you do make it to DC all of the Smithsonian museums are wonderful. The Udvar Hazy Center at IAD airport using airport transfers tonbridge is another great site if you like airplanes.

Come through Albuquerque, New Mexico on your way to/from the Grand Canyon in Arizona. We have some beautiful drives through the state, including the Turquoise Trail and the Valles Caldera. And when done, we have 13 microbreweries that make everything from pisner to stout to wet your whistle. And you can probably meet Al Unser. Cheers! Tyler

Hi Bill, I'm well versed in what to see and do here in California. I've helped many people plan trips here and would be happy to assist you and your family. Disneyland is one small area, and the rest of Los Angeles is automotive Disneyland. You could spend weeks trying to see everything. Shoot me an email at mail, @, mg nuts. com (remove commas and spaces)

Gentlemen:

Thank you all for your prompt responses. I shall definately find the Peterson in LA. The museum in Seattle is also a possibility as I have a mate up in Tacoma whom I may visit. Yes, the Smithsonian is the ultimate, I was briefly there a few years ago, long enough to see that mutch more time was needed. In that visit I managed cover my main targets, the Enola Gay and the Hope diamond. I would like to go back but Washington extends the trip substantially. A possibility is to extend from Washington down into the Southern states. Seeing something of the Civil War battlefields is of interest if there is accessibility. Anything else of particular note down that way? new mexico sounds unmissable!

Steve S: I have attempted to email you to say thanks but forward planning is beyond me. After a couple of failures the email haas disappeared into cyberspace so I hop it turns up at your end.

Thanks to all.

During the first week of September, the Collier Cup All-MG race will stage its 60th Anniversary race in Watkins Glen, New York. There will be hundreds of MGs participating and spectating, including a number from the North American Triple-M Register (the pre-war overhead cam models). I'll be bringing my 1936 MG PB Airline Coupe (not racing, however), but there will be a good representation from all years.
Well worth the visit if time and schedule cooperate.

Smithsonian museums amazing, still have not made the part at Dulles with the space shuttle, SR71-B, etc. If you are down south in Florida, the Kennedy Space Center is a must see. San Diego: Balboa park and all museums and the zoo. George

NY: Niagara Falls
CA: Redwoods/Rte 1/Yosemite
MI/NY/PA: Great Lakes
AZ: Grand Canyon
FLA: The Keys

My top 5 - I guess - there are many, many more!

If you're coming southeastward and you just like "pretty", you'll find the Blue Ridge Parkway or anywhere within 50 miles on either side will be wonderful. If you want to drive from one end to the other, allow about two weeks and carry several well filled picnic baskets.

Bill,

You All should be pronounced "yawl" as in sailboat.

Bill,
They really have given you a lot to think about so I will only throw a couple more your way. If you decide to fly into Dallas there are of course lots of museums and a world aquarium but I would suggest you drive into Fort Worth. It's the other half of "DFW" about 30 miles west. A part of the city is refered to as "Cowtown". It's a beautiful western part of the original city next to the stockyards and a famous bar (honkey tonk) called "Billy Bobs". You might even end up heading home with a new cowboy hat and boots. And by that I mean beautiful boots and hat, not some touristy crap. I could even meet you there for dinner. You might also make a trip down to Houston and see "Johnson space center'". It's where the astronauts train for space walks in the largest swimming pool in the world. 6.2 million gallons (23.5 million litres) of water. It is quite amazing to watch. Whatever you decide have a great time with your granddaughter.

Gentlemen:

thanks to yawl again for the overwealming advice. You blokes are certainly proud of your country to wish a visitor so much to see!

Rob: hat and boots sound terrific but could I wear them in a TF? What I would like to bring home is a Texas oil well. I could put it in the back yard and fill up the TF directly. Thanks for your invitation, should I head to Dallas I shall email you ahead and see if wwe can arrange something.

Many of the civil war battlefields are an easy drive from our capital. It was said you could hear the cannon fire from several of the battlefields from the capital grounds. Lovely area. Regards, tom

If you are flying into Dallas, TX I would recommend renting a car taking a roadtrip to LA.

The first destination from Dallas would be to go to The Big Texan Steakranch in Amarillo, Texas. http://bigtexan.com/

If you are brave enough, try the 72oz steak challenge. I did.... check the toilet....

From there drive West on RT 40 and see the most wonderful landscape the SW has to offer. The Texas panhandle is boring... lots of cattle and oil wells. Once in AZ, you have to go see the Grand Canyon. Pictures do not do any justice. It is a place that will stay with you forever. And of course the Hoover Dam if you have time.

A place to stop and rest for the night would be Bullhead City, AZ - Laughlin, NV. They border each other. Stay at a casino, eat a nice buffet, and try your luck on the tables or slots.

RT 40 will take you straight to LA. You will pass through great landscape -- Mojave, Twentynine Palms, etc....

Enjoy

Bill if you are in the south, New Orleans is a must. Best food in the world, great WWII Museum. Mobile AL. battleship USS ALABAMA, Pensacola Fl. one of the finest air museums in the world, Free entry. and of course the white sand beaches.
Tom Maine

I am a big fan of the Pima air museum in Tucson, and in addition all the aircraft cemeteries around the city make you wish you could just climb around all those beauties.
And there are beautiful national parks in the area.
Have fun!
