MG TD TF 1500 - Trans is out

What a pain in the floorboards.

I'll have it apart tomorrow, but just looking in the top I see nothing obviously wrong with the gears, even first's dogs. I'm hoping a new set of bearings is all I need.

The throwout bearing (carbon block)looks brand new as does the pressure plate and the clutch plate springs. No dust anywhere indicating this was freshened up not too many miles ago.

The screws holding the floor.... some didn't budge and lost their heads, a few are shown below, they popped right out.

While I'm in the neighborhood, I'm doing the clutch and brake peddle bushings.

The e-brake tunnel is nearly toast. Really rotten down both bottom edges. A $495.00 item at A/S. I think for now I'll graft a new flange down both sides and let the carpet hide the deed.

To graft on some bottom flanges to your gearbox tunnel you might look for some galvanized 90 degree angle flashing at a building supply store. I think they make it with about 2 inch flanges on each side. I think I did that with my TD some 38 years ago and its been working a treat ever since.

John, Great idea, thanks.

You could also look for a sheet metal, welding, or fabrication shop in your area. An angled repair piece should be easy to make and tack weld on. George

For $495, I'll fab one up out of stainless steel!

...or for under $200, you can save yourself some time and procure a good used one from ebay-

I feel your pain. I just went through this. Had the gearbox checked out, replaced the clutch, t/o bearing and pressure plate. Still growls in 1st and reverse but it all checked out. My problem was different than yours tho.
