MG TD TF 1500 - TF Steering Wheel

I recently ordered a Brooklands style steering wheel from Moss for my 1954 TF (2658). The wheel obviously wants to be positioned with the spokes at the 10 and 2 position (based on the positioning of the MG octagon which has limited options) When I installed the wheel and postioned it over the spline on the steering column (which doesn't have adjustments)the wheel spokes lined up at the 12 and 3 postion and the MG octagon is off centre. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get it right?

Larry:
Check the steering shaft where it connects to the rack pinion and see if moving the connection one way or the other gets you closer to the orientation you need.

Larry,

If Paul's suggestion gives you too much adjustment, (I'm guessing it will give you 8 and 11 or 4 and 7 spoke positions), you can adjust both tie rods to give you the correct position.
You will need to loosen the clamps on the small end of the rack boots first. Then loosen the lock nuts on the tie rod ends. At this point adjust the tie rods the same number of turns and the same direction until the wheel is correct. Tighten the lock nuts and boot clamps. Replace any steering rack oil lost from the boots.

As long as you adjust the tie rods the same number of turns and the same direction, your alignment won't change. You will be lengthening one rod and shortening the other the same amount. Both tie rods have right hand threads.

Good luck!

Larry,

Before you ordered the Moss Brooklands steering wheel which is made in Taiwan, did you check out the original one by Kimble in the UK?

I think there's a big dfference in quality but the price difference is not that great. I bought one from a Kimble dealer and the price difference was equivalent to about $70 Canadian.

The Blumel badge is included with the Kimble wheel, and I believe its $50 (U.S.) extra from Moss.

The above may work. Make sure you leave plenty of thread screwed into the tie rod end (don't unscrew one end too far). I think you can remove the flange off of the steering rack pinion shaft (take off the big nut), and position it anywhere you want.

Thanks for the help and directions everyone. This will be a project for next week to get it sorted. Gordon in Quebec, I didn't know about the Kimble wheel and have looked on the net and can't find an example. Is there a place you can direct me to? (I'm certainly used to doing comparisons in Canadian $ as we moved here from Vancouver about 18 mos ago. It's great country for T's as there's not much traffic on the South Island and cruizing around through the vineyards is wonderful.)
