MG TD TF 1500 - TF rear spring on a TD

Having finally managed to get both rear springs off the TD, I have found a manufacturer's name and part number on the smallest leaf of one spring - "Bramber 500880". The number "500880" is the current part number that Brown and Gammons use for a TF spring and I have found that the Bramber Engineering Co manufacturered leaf springs in the 1960s and 1970s. I have previously suspected that my car has a TF chassis (for example it has the mountings for a fuel pump at the rear and the holes for fixing the horns to the dumb irons). It seems that I have TF springs as well. However, the free camber of the springs is about 4.2", which is very close to the 4.1" free camber for a TD spring and a long way from the 2.85" free camber of a TF spring, so it looks as if someone has re-arced these springs to the TD specifications. As the spring leaves look to be in good condition I'm going the rebuild them with new rubber components. Matt

I'm curious, what does your dumb iron in the front have for a chassis number? Does this car have provisions or the TF spare tire carrier in the back? (a hole and a bung welded in each side for bolts, and two ears on the center of the rear most cross member)

David, the chassis number is very indistinct, I think it is 6488, but the letters are not distinguishable (however it is obscured by sheet metal, so I have only been able to view it from an oblique angle). I am not sure about the hole and bung, but there are definately two ears welded to the centre of the rear cross member, which are not being used (see photo). Matt

Yup, looks like a TF. those ears are for the spare tire bracket. You should also find a bracket for the steering collum bolted to a flange welded on to the hoop that goes up through the scuttle behind the dash.

David - "You should also find a bracket for the steering collum bolted to a flange welded on to the hoop that goes up through the scuttle behind the dash."
I believe that is the same on the later TDs if I am not mistaken. Cheers - Dave D.

My late TD (28929) has a bracket that holds the steering collum, but it attaches to two scuttle bolts on the tub, much like on a TC. The TF has a bracket welded to the frame loup, and the steering collum bracket bolts to that.

My chassis hoop has the welded on bracket for the steering column. Matt

Sounds like you might have a TF lurking under your TD. The TD tub and body will bolt right up to a TF chassis. You can't read the chassis number? What is the engine number? Which air filters, carbs and valve cover do you have? Do you have any more pictures?
