MG TD TF 1500 - TF Instrument Panel Color

Gentlemen
The instrument panel on my 54 TF is in need of refurbishment. The original paint, which is chipped and faded needs to be resprayed However, the Moss Classic Colours TF instrument panel bronze looks too dark to me, as do the examples in Clausager's Original MG T Series. My panel looks as it was originally a darkish fawn color, not bronze. Has anybody got any opinons as to the correct shade to use?
Thanks in anticipation.

The Moss color is correct!
Yours has faded most likely or was repainted.

James,
It should be a dark bronze metalic.
Some have mentioned in the past, similar color matches are Plastikote 5317 Honda Bronze, or GM 7166.

I thought that Moss's color was wrong as well, since out of the can and brushed on it looked too metallic. But, after my panel was bead blasted, the chrome was masked, and the Moss paint was sprayed on, it turned out perfect! (Sjake well first, use light coats).

Actually the Moss color is very good for TF's. For TD's I think it is too light.

Thanks everybody
Your comments have been most helpful. The illustrations in Original T must have lost something in the printing. Now all I have to do is buck up the courage to remove the instrument panel.

Put masking tape over the chromium edge with plenty of overlap - over where you are going to paint and then cut away the unwanted tape with a sharp Stanley knife blade. Its the only way to get a really good edge.

You can also buy special masking tape at most autobody paint suppliers. 3M makes this tape in various sizes from 1/8",1/4",& 1/2". It has a very fine edge.

Good Luck,

Only just noted you are in the UK. Halfords VW Metalic Sand is a very good match.

Since John's TF instrument panel has a seperate chrome edge, I dont think that the tape masking advice really applies here.
John, if you doubt the colour then attack what is left of your original paint with a cutting polish to help determine the correct colour, I know the original paint on my panel comes up very bright (for a few days anyway). The back of your panel may also give a good indication. You can use the same paint on the steering wheel hub and the badge surround. I do see a lot of repainted panels which are too gold and too dark.

I removed everything from my panel on the TF, left with a bare piece of metal. In my case the removal of the guages revealed the original color. I have to assume due to the protection under the chrome bezels that the color is fairly correct. A dark metalic bronze.

I did a test spray of the Moss instrument panel paint when it arrived and it looks a close match to the tired old panel on my TF. The illustrations in Ditlev Clausagers Original T Series must have suffered badly in the printing process because they look dark bronze. When the weather deteriorates I will bite the bullet and remove the instrument panel for renovation.
