MG TD TF 1500 - TF Headlight Ring

Hello

Has anyone on the BBS recently purchased new reproduction headlight chrome rings for the TF?
Do they match the original profile?
Were you satisfied?

I can't say Tom. I ordered new inner rings back in about 2003 for mine but I sent them back. I used the originals I had plated but they have issues. I wasn't pleased with the replacements. As for what you asked about... Here is the contour of the originals. The front cover of the New England T Register book has a great picture (or at least it did ) of a TF front end if you have the copy.

This is John Brickell's TF and these do not have the "straight out and roll at the front" profile. More of an angle down back to front. I'm not sure if John bought these or they came with the car. This profile was used on the later midgets. I see Moss has two offerings and I suspect that would be the difference but You might see if they will send you a better image than what they show on line.

MG TF brand new chrome headlamp rims triple plated x2. 32.95 from EBay UK. Seller is Classic Car Spares.
These look to be the correct profile and the same as I used. Made in England. Will post anywhere.

Mine are new repos and have the straight profile, they look nice but not correct. If I could find the correct ones I'd change them. Poor photo. PJ

B&G has this listed, anyone know if it's the correct profile? PJ

PJ Jennings

Originals, same as LaVerne's first picture.

Matthew.

Matthew, So are we saying that John Brickells TF has the correct rims? PJ

PJ Jennings

No Paul...that one is not. These would be correct.

L E D LaVerne

This is the ring on the later Midgets which is what I believe is on John's car.

L E D LaVerne

LaVerne, the ones that you say are correct look very much like the ones on my car. More than likely mine are slightly different than the originals, but they do look close. What looks like a dent on the right rim is a goofy reflection. PJ

I have a couple originals in my attic, will get out this weekend and take some pictures.

Hi guys
Thanks for the comments. Laverne and Matthew show good photos of originals. I have a pair of originals, but they have lost their luster.

My question had to do with currently available repro's.
They are listed by many vendors. Moss shows them in their photo gallery and they look correct. Abingdon lists them, but no photo.
Holden Vintage in the UK has dozens of rings photographed on their excellent website. The TF rings look correct.
Surely someone out there has bought a pair of repro's.
Were you satisfied?

I'd be happy with a $35 pair of repro's, rather than 4 times that for rechroming and all the associated hassle to re-do my originals.

If I end up buying a pair and find them satisfactory, I'll post a photo of original and repro side by side.

Tom,
I bought reproduction headlight rims from NOS locators on eBay and have been very happy with the quality. I don't know if the profile is exactly like the originals, but they look close enough to me, and they do have the correct rivet on the top of the ring unlike some repros-and the price seems very reasonable.

I am reactivating this thread. I bought a pair of rings this week from Moss. $34 for the pair, on sale.
The one on the left is an original, on the right is the new reproduction.
The height is identical, measured with a micrometer.
The originals have that brass rivet on the top. The repro has a fake rivet. It fits nicely and looks good.
For the price, I'll be happy with them. I'm not entering any contests. I will save my originals to one day be re-chromed.

As you can see, the side profile is not identical. Better than the pair I bought from another vendor 5 years ago.
