MG TD TF 1500 - TF Fuel Line Issue

Spending time under the hood today on an unrelated issue I noticed that the brace on the underside of the bonnet that holds the catch had been rubbing against the fuel line coming into the pump--had in fact damn near rubbed all the way through it (look right above the hood latch spring). I bent the line out of the way for now, but it wants replacing.

If you look at the picture, you'll see the line exit the fuel pump, and then over the wiper motor it couples to another line that actually runs back to the tank. Looking at the WSM and the Moss catalog, it appears that it's supposed to be one line all the way from pump to tank.

If that's so, then I guess this problem happened before and the PO chose to solve it by just cutting out the damaged bit and replacing it with a new bit instead of the whole $90 line. Anybody ever see anything like this before? Is this a common thing? Is there a ready-made replacement, or do I need to have one made? And if so, anybody see a problem with using a braided flexible line to replace as a just-in-case?

(And before anybody jumps on me about the missing carb overflow line--I know. That's what I was under there doing. And, yes, this picture also shows an untrimmed choke cable which has also been attended to. I put a new cable in about a month or two ago and wanted to give it a chance to get used fully and stretched out before I gave it the final trim)

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Andy - regardless of what you use (and you can make you own ridged replacement by just getting some copper line, unsolder the nipples on either end of the existing, damaged line and solder them on the new line), you should get an elbow like the one on the outlet fitting so that the line doesn't arc up in to the bonnet. Elbows are available from Moss under P/N 375-038 Cheers - Dave

Andy - hope you will consider coming up to Clinton SC next weekend - we are having a small GOF at Presbyterian College.

Andy, The connection to the copper line is exactly where the flex line comes off to go to the rear carb on later TFs with the rear mounted fuel pump. You may want to check out other very early TFs with the underbonnet pump to see if this is original or not for the early cars. Perhaps the main line was replaced with the later one at some point? I'm pretty sure we replaced the front-rear line on the TF I helped restore years ago, and we had to cut one end off and solder/re-use one of the origianl ends for some reason (it was male instead of female or vice-versa or something).

Hi Andy, Not so sure it even needs replacing. You should be be able to just clean up the abrasion and tin and solder the area, then sand and polish to blend in. Remove the section from the line before doing this of course. Cheers Phil

Jeff,

I'd love to come, but have two kids birthday parties on Saturday. One of them is in Gray Court, which is only 10 or 15 miles from Clinton and I may sneak out to come say howdy and look at everyone's cars, but that'll be the best I can do. Hope a good time is had by all.

Never seen a TF with a under the hood fuel pump.

According the the literature, pump moved to the rear with car #1501. As my car is #0537--first day of production!--the pump is up front. It's certainly easier to get to up there, but it's also one more thing to have to work around. Sometimes--hell, most of the time--I really wish the TF's bonnet opened up like a TD's. Dad's TA is a heck of a lot easier to work on.
