MG TD TF 1500 - TF front fender adjustment

Hi TF owners, a question:
I have not yet removed my front fenders. That will await the repaint in the upcoming months. But, my right front fender sits about 3/4 inch lower than the left. Is there any room for adjustment where the fender bolts to the frame? Are the bolt holes in the fender elongated or enlarged to accomodate adjustment?
If not, how have you fellows adjusted fender height?

Tom, Have you checked the chassis for straightness? I had the same situation and found out my chassis had a twist in it, probably from a past accident. After straightening the frame, everything is now straight and equal in measurements. Might not be your problem, but worth a look. PJ

Tom,

Several years ago I had the misfortune of being hit by a teenage girl in a big Durango... My left front fender, among other things, had to be replaced... The "new" fender, when fitted on the car, was as you described on your car... The fender had to be modified by cutting a "V" in the front of it, closing the "V" and welding it... Once the cosmetics were completed and the painting done, it looked right (See attached picture)...

The bottom line is, the fenders on our "T" cars have always been a wee bit different from one car to the next... Even when the cars were manufactured in the UK there was often a need to try two or three fenders to get everything to fit propery and match up... Your car may have had a fender replaced at some point in the past and that also could be the cause of the problem...

Cheers mate,

Thanks fellows;
As I look through the service receipts I do see that there was a "front fender repair" in the '70s. I'm hoping for a situation like Rod's as I do not anticipate a body off resto when I repaint. And....looking through the archives, I see much discussion about fender height. One member a few years ago suggested we "step away from the car" with tape measures, and just accept some imperfection. Unless, of course, you have a showcar.

Many years ago I replaced a body tub on a 1954 TF that had been hit hard in the left front. It was the chief of police running a stop sign and his front left wheel hit just behind the left front wheel enterring the body and pinning the lady driver.Fortunately she was not hurt. I received a new tub and left front wing from Hutson in the UK. On installation the clearance between the headlight bucket and grill shell was greatly different. The insurance company paid for a new right front wing to match
Apparently as the story goes there were two different front wings. One was a two finger and the other was a four finger space between the grill and headlight bucket.
