MG TD TF 1500 - TF Assembly Sequence

I am at the stage of putting the fron sheet metal back on the car. What is the best sequence for assembly? I did not take the car apart and do not have any idea on what the order should be.

Thanks

Sorry, can't help - I'm just a TD'er. But I'm drooling over the fantastic fit of that door. Bud

I started with the rear wings, then running boards then front wings!
Are you doing a trial fit before taking it apart for painting?
Pilkie

I did a trial fit, but I am curious about the assembly at the front - grill, fenders side panels and the best order toput back on the car.

Thanks
Rick

1 Grill, 2 Side panels, 3 Front Fenders.
Do you have the cross brace that goes behind the radiator from one fender to the other? PJ

I did engine bay side panels, front wings, grille, bonnet,V panel below grille.

Just curious but shouldn't the car be on the wheels instead on jack stands to take account for flex? Or is that just for door alignment fit?

Does the rubber strip on the cowl / bonnet need to be considered?

Car looks awesome Rick. Nice job.

PJ - I do have the cross brace for the fenders.

Frank - final fit of the doors was on wheels then dismantled again for paint. Will do one more fitting after paint.

The steering wheel should go on first... :-)

Tub on (not bolted down tight), grille, side panels, rear valance, fuel tank, rear fenders, side panels, running boards, front fenders, front valance, windscreen, interior trim and dash last.

If you do this ..you will be taking the dash back out in order to mount the windscreen and the dash in the TF is no fun.

L E D LaVerne

If you do the interior wing the running boards off, you are less likely to scuff them up.

I think the TF would make a good looking rod myself.

needs bicycle fenders on the front. Spiffy.

I would not contemplate permanently attaching your steering wheel until you have all interior components installed. Installing the dash is a nightmare with the wheel insitu and unless your the "Indian Rubber Man" you will find it difficult fixing items like upholstery panels, wiring and wiper controls. I lost count how many times I fitted and removed my wheel to gain access and I am 64 inches tall.

Further advice I offer if you have rebuilt the tub, ensure the dash fits with the upholstery in place. I had to reduce my dash width by removing 10mm because of the PO's work rebuilding the tub.

Sounds ridiculous, however its been documented before, fuel tank fitup can effect door alignments.

Prior to fitting side panels or front guards ensure everything mechanical is tried and tested, considerably easier to fix the errant leak, etc with clear access to the engine bay.

No intent to be a gloom and doom merchant just been there done that and had multiple episodes of build it, rip it to bits, fix an issue, rebuild it.

Sorry,...the steering wheel deal was meant as humor. It indeed is about the last item to go on.

My experience is that it goes pretty smoothly, except for the fender cross brace. That was a real stinker for me to get in there and the air was blue on several occasions. I am sure there must be abetter way to put it in. The running board strips need to be carefully bent to the correct contours or they will cause problems when they are drawn down with the little bolts. Mike

I've found you don't really need the cross brace. In fact it won't fit with the blower in my car. Good trade I'd say.
