MG TD TF 1500 - TF aircleaners - R&R?

TF Volks standard fitment, 2 bolts each holds them on - however these bolts are very close to the bodywork side panel, especially the forward one.

Any way to access these bolts, or is removing the RHS side panel not to hard?

Don't try and remove the filters that way. There are two other bolts that hold the air filters to the carb body. The two bolts you see only hold the air filter halves together.

Look down between the carbs and you'll see the ones you need to remove. Their fairly accessable. Once removed you can lift the filters straight up. For the front filter you may need to push the engine over a bit and/or loosen the stabilizer link to get the clearance to lift it out.

I took mine out just once, and it took me about an hour to get them back on. Frankly, I would not do it again as I think they are pretty useless as "air filters" and seem to function a sieve for sticks and stone more than micron particles.

A little high pressure air will blow most of the particulate out of them.

Unfortunately, since the front filter has the oil vapour vent pipe from the rocker cover attached to it, the filter can get pretty messy, so it is a regular service task. you can get oil dripping out of it in bad cases (but, hey, what's another little puddle underneath, right?) The rear one stays quite clear in my experience. Jim's right, you need to take the nut off from behind the carb flange and not worry about the one on the front. Putting them back on is a bit tricky, especially if you are fitting new gaskets. But you will soon get the hang of it ... Good Luck, AB
PS - any of you guys tried blocking off the breather pipe from the rocket cover, and the pipe on the front filter? Any benefits/disadvantages? AB

The PO for my TF-1500 had fitted an after-market valve cover which did not have a fitting for the breather pipe and it appears that he did indeed block off the attachment point on the air filter. I've been running this car this same way for some time now and do not seem to notice any adverse effects. I am planning to change back to the original way as soon as I can gather all the necessary parts. Will let you (and this board) know if there is any change in preformance. I don't expect any however.

The cleaners are close to the side walls. However it maybe that your engine is not upright i.e. the engine control bar is too long shifting the engine to the right. Adjustment of the bar will move the cleaners away from the side wall. However to set this bar up correctly involves a lot of work; but it is worhtwhile. In essence it involves the removal of the cars and exhaust allowing the engine to stand fee on its mountings.
