MG TD TF 1500 - TD TF wire wheel paint

Hi
I will be having some work done on my wire wheels soon. I searched the archives for a color name or code to match original. I found only discussion of disc wheels.
Does anyone have a name or code for an appropriate silver for the TF wire wheels?

I don't have the exact name but there is a 1957 Ford color that is very close to the original.

Tom, here's a wheel on my TF, I bought the car from Marvin Gruber and I think he painted them just before I got it. They look great, actually better than the photo. I'll contact Marvin and see what paint and color it is. PJ

Thanks guys;
Paul, that's what I want. If you could get me the color name or code, I'd be very grateful.

has anyone powder coated their wires? are all powder coatings still UV unstable? regards, tom

Powder coating wires is a bad idea. It will not flow like paint and leave your nipples and spoke ends subject to rust. I know because I had it done 16 years ago. I replaced them with some Daytons except the spare.

nuthin' worse than rusty nipples. tom

maybe rusty nuts?

Tom, Marvin said he bought the paint at Lowe's and thinks it's called, "Silver Metallic", in a rattle can. PJ

I just had 5 wheels done for our 54 TF. Take look at my webpage to see some info on the car & the wheels. I haven't updated it for a few wks, we are making progress, all removable body parts are off & being refurbed, chassis & tub due next.

The powder he used has some metal flake in it but not a lot. I don't know how close it is to original shade, the wheels weren't original paint when we got the car. Jimmie Cherry did a good job at a good price, bead
blast, powder coat & clear coat for $125/wheel. We saw a lot of his work when at his shop, great stuff. He does a lot of Model A Ford wheels for those guys. He does a lot for boats where UV exposure is almost constant. The clear coat may be for UV.
I can take a closeup pic of the nipples, etc. and post it, that might reduce fears, looks good to me, but of course usage could change things. But the Model A guys love it.

Thanks for checking with Marvin. So, rattle can paint, right? Really looks good? Were you surprised he painted by can?

Tom, Not really, seems like it's, (rattle can type), is being used a lot any more for some things. Eastwood sells a lot of them, some are pretty expensive. Someone mentioned earlier that they wouldn't powder coat a wire wheel, I agree, I wouldn't either, as you don't want a super hard finish on a wire wheel. Stones will chip a hard surface coating and their tougher to repair. Me, I'm a chrome lover and my painted wheels will eventually go on the shelf. These wheels though, look very nice. How original in color, I really don't know. I guess a MGB painted wire wheel would probably be the same and easier to define the true color. Be worth looking at. PJ
