MG TD TF 1500 - TD Steering Column

Have looked at exploded diagrams of the steering columns in both the Moss and Brown and Gammons catalogues and am still confused about the order of the parts. Can someone either confirm or correct my list as below.

Top of outer column chromium plated for about 10"
Top of outer column swaged out for about 2" to take felt bearing
Order of parts at top of column is :- inner column, chromium clamp, spined shaft inserted, small chromium collar, chromium plated spring as spline cover, steering wheel. The B&G catalogue shows and aditional spacer but the Moss one doesn't. Does the chrome clamp simply rub on the outer column or is there a thrust washer of some sort.

B&G shows two further clamps - one obviously fits the bracket which is attached to the bulkhead bolts. Mine is also chromium plated. The other clamp (which I don't have) appears to fit much lower down the colum and is simply bent up from flat sheet The only place I can see it being attached to is the box section that supports the bulkhead. Can anyone help.

Are you talking about the wire clamp at the scuttle that holds the leather damper cover?

I should be like ther water clamps.

Chris,

Thanks for the prompt response. No - I have the wire clip you are referring to. I've dug out my manual and the clip is shown on page J2 item 57. I still suspect it fits to the bulkhead turret. I don't have the thing but it wwould be quite easy to bend one up from a piece of steel strip. The other piece I am missing is item 52- is thius vital.

Cheers

Jan, the clamp you are talking about, is a steady, which attaches via spacer tubes to a hole in the bracket on the bulkhead which, this bracket also takes the bulkhead and radiator stays. the spacers and order of components are shown in the workshop manual. Dave

The upper chromium column length adjustment clamp used to tighten the steering wheel's shaft to the main steering shaft has no spacer. The clamp doesn't fasten to the outer tube. It clamps to the main inner shaft and rotates with the steering wheel. There is also a key which is under the chromium adjustment clamp. It's to keep the steering wheel from sliding off if the clamp collar is loose. You assemble everything as you said, pull the clamp, cup, and spring forward and then insert the key. Then everything is slid back over the key and the bolt for the clamp is inserted as it must pass through a clearance cut in the main inner shaft. For the steering wheel to accidently come off, the clamp nut must fall off, the bolt must fall out, and the key must fall out.

There is a second clamp in the engine compartment around the outside steering column. It does bolt to the tower. There is also a spacer between the "ears" of this clamp and the tower.

Jan,

I just scanned in the Steering information from the Service Parts List, AKD 834. It's at
http://www.home.earthlink.net/~budkrueger/Steering.html
Hope this helps.
