MG TD TF 1500 - TD or TF??

Hello,

I recently bought a more or less complete TD & a more or less complete TF that have been completely dismantled about 2 decades ago have been lying about since.

So I have a TDchassis and a TFchassis, along with a complete Xpag-engine and a dismantled one and numerous mechanical and bodyparts.

Everything is mixed up, and I have trouble to find out what (mostly body)parts are TD and what are TF.

I have a TD myself and most mechanical parts (engine, suspension, axles etc) are the same and interchangeable

Obviously the following parts are different:
Front- and rearwings, bonnet, runningboards and doors and thus also the frontquarterpanels.

I am in doubt about the following:
scuttle/bulkhead, bulkhead footplate, scuttletop, rear quarterpanels, rearpanel, wheelarch, tank and seats.

Can somebody help me out??

Thank you,

Erik

The TD bulkhead has a lot of bolts holding it to the scuttle. The TF has far fewer.

Bob Jeffers

Seats are buckets (seperate) for the TF
Scuttle top for the TF will have the rear edge to take the crash pad.
Bulkhead/firewall for TF will have holes for the wiper motor and cable.
Rear panel for the TD has tank strap holes closer together than TF (the pairs of holes at the top).
TD fuel tank is more 'upright' than the TF tank which is more leaning forwards. Use the tank endplates to see this.
Do the paint colours help you?

Matthew.

Erik, a handy way of comparing components is to look at their part numbers in a catalog, such as Moss. Bud
Bud Krueger

The transmission cover and passenger foot rest metal are the same, virtually everything else sheet metal related was changed from TD to TF.

OK, thank you all for your input.

Bud's idea about the Moss catalog is a good one, it also shows, that the hood frames are different.

The bulkhead is not in the catalog, is, as Bob says, the only difference the number of holes in it??

The colour does not help me out Matthew; these are all different.

It really is an odd collection of parts, but it should be possible to make 2 cars of it.

The TF bulk head has a recess and holes at the top corners to take brackets for the fixed bonnet sides. The image that Matthew posted shows one of these brackets as well as the TF only hole for the wiper drive

Look at ebay item # 321112916097 for good shots of a TD bulkhead. Note the two holes for the fuel pump mounting bracket on the photo's left side at the bottom of the tool box area. Unless from a very early TF, those won't be there. George

OK, thank you, just to be sure: the bulkheads are basicly the same??

I would have to mate TD to TF and compare mounting holes and dementions. I'd swear the TF is lower, smaller and all together not the same shape.

This help any?

David Sheward

That image shows a major difference. The mounting holes that mount it to the cowl/firewall do not go all the way to the bottom on the sides. Bud
Bud Krueger

Don't know if any of these shots are helpful, but here are some taken while pulling the car apart. One photo shows a hole over the drivers legs that is not supposed to be there. You might get something out of them. PJ
