MG TD TF 1500 - TD low fuel sending unit leak

I've noticed an occasional drop of fluid on my garage floor directly under my low fuel sending unit, so I assume the gasket is going bad. Moss sells two types of gaskets for the unit: the original cork type and a replacement rubber type. Any experience out there on which is better? Should a gasket sealant be used and, if so, any particular kind? Also, does anyone out there have any experience in removing the sending unit with the gas tank in place? I'd love not to have to remove the tank if possible. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

On your sending unit if cork gasket was used you can be sure that the sending unit has indentations where the screws pulled it tight to the gas tank. You probably need to straighten them out and check with a straight edge. If you read the thread that Evan sent you to, you will see that this topic has been discussed before. The best fix is to get the Abingdon spares gasket. I think it must be provided by the SU company and seems to be the same material used on the SU fuel pump gasket. The ones Moss sells only hold for 4 or 5 years. (cork in my case) You can make the change with out removing the gas tank. You need to drain the gas first. Put the old gas in the Ford or Chevy. You will need a short screw driver, I used one of the L shaped for the screws at the top of the unit, as even the stubby won't work there. As David has stated , you need to dip the screw threads when you install them. I used a gas resistant Permatex sealer on the gasket and the threads and had no leaks. I check it yesterday when installing the ss exhaust system and still no leaks. Hope this helps John

Thanks, Evan for the archives reference. I should have checked them first. And thanks, John for your good account. It sounds from all I've read that the Abingdon Spares gasket is the best way to go, with a gasoline resistant Permatex sealant.

John, are you in the DC area? I'm in Arlington drive the GW Parkway as my regular run.
