MG TD TF 1500 - TD Horn Switch

Anders Clausager shows on page 88 a TD dashbord with the surround to the horn switch chromium plated. In the text, however, he says it should be black with white letters. Mine appears to have been plated at some time in its life so would appreciate some confirmation that black is the one to go for - also should the larger diameter backing ring be plated (as on page 88. Inside the push part of the sitch there is a dished plate with an insulated teminal in the centre. One of the horn wires attaches to this terminal. The other wire must make contact with the plate. How does it do this - is it via onew of the long thin screws that hold the case together.

p.s. after much searching have manged to buy a pack of the thin screws - have some spares if anyone needs a set.

Jan,

I can speak for the later switch, from TD 18883, without the headlamp dip switch. The button is bakelite, housed in a steel stamping that is painted black. Behind this, there is a fiberous plastic board with the switch contacts mounted to it. Then a bakelite spacer, then a chrome plated brass plate. This assembly is screwed together with brass screws, threaded into the brass plate. Also, there is a cadmium plated ring behind the dash that is held to the same screws with nuts.

I have a picture of the switch dissasembled if you need it.

Thanks Evan

Info confirms exactly what I thought. Black ring under the buttom - chrome 'washer' between the switch body and the dash centre panel.

The text must have been refering to the ignition switch but got screwed up in editing.

Chris,

Pleeeze, pleeze tell me black is the original colour for the horn switch. Taken consolation from your pic No 6 which shows it black.

One other pointer for restoring the horn switch. I ordered the moss chrome bezel (233-950) and found it has a different thread pitch than the original. The original brass screws won't fit.

I'm having my original brass bezel replated.

FYI....

The horn is all black except for the chrome base.

The text I was talking about I think should have been directed toward the ignition switch bezel which is chrome with a black background and white lettering.
