MG TD TF 1500 - TD Fuel Filter Placement

I see that the consensus regarding fuel filter placement is for it to be between the fuel pump and the carbs to prevent burnout of the pump should the filter clog.. I have one a mechanic installed near the fuel tank and would like to correct the situation. The question is what type/brand filter and will it be easily installed. I have a steel braided line from pump to carb and ideally want one that will screw into the existing fittings. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Because of the flared fittings with British Pipe thread (or whatever it is), you would likely have to have something fabricated for a direct bolt-on. Then the fuel line would be too long, which could be a problem. Much easier to put something in line. There are everything from cheap plastic to real fancy billet filters available. Billet would look good inline with the braided fuel line. Until restoration I used a cheap inline plastic one, with cheap black fuel line- ugly but effective. How much crud is in your tank- do you really need a filter? George

Thanks for your reply. The tank looks pretty good at the top and I keep it as full as possible. I believe it was cleaned out 25 years ago (bad memory and records) when the current filter was installed which should probably be changed at this point. Maybe that's the best course to take a this time.

For what its worth, I mounted a Facet solid state pump right to the fuel tank. I used one fitting, an elbow with a 1/8" NPT National Pipe Taper male thread screwed into the pump and NPSM National Pipe Straight Machine swivel nut attached to the tank fitting. It is designed almost identical to the FBSPPX Female British Straight Parallel Pipe swivel nut elbow and tightened up on the tank strainer fitting (not interchangeable in all cases though).

It is always positive gravity fed and only pushes fuel to the carb, never pulls.

I've run into the situation where the float is closed but the pump is vapor locked, and runs wide open, because our TDs don't use the return hose. The pump can't pump the vapor anywhere and can't build up pressure to shut off.

The car runs and returns to normal soon enough, but I have applied some "hydraulic pump" rules to this situation- locate the pump below and as close as possible to the source- maximize push and minimize pull.
