MG TD TF 1500 - TD front wings

Hello - I'm just new to this group, purchased a 1951 TD TOTAL basket case this Spring and an trying to get thru sorting these parts. I'll try to not ask any stupid questions, but with no background that might be a challenge. OK, that being said here goes. I am trying to put the front wings on but the top of the shocks won't let it nest into place. What am I missing? Justin

Any photos? What type of shocks are on it? PJ

Justin, if you have Armstrong shocks the fenders need a bump out to clear the top of the shock. The other cause might be that you don't have the fender high enough to clear the shock mechanism. When you bolt the fender to the headlight bracket which should be bolted to the radiator frame it pulls the fender into a more vertical position. Here's a picture of fenders with and without the bump out. Google mg td armstrong and girling shocks and you can see what you have.

OK, thanks fellas, now I see the problem. This is an early 51 TD and should have Girling shocks I am told. These shocks have been replaced with Armstrong's and the wings do not have the inside hump for the shock tops to clear. That was simple, now all I guess I have to do is find Girling shocks or different wings, more money. Justin

You can make what you have work. For many years only Armstrong replacement shocks were available, and many original Girling cars were fitted with them. I recall there is a spot welded plate or flange at the top of the opening in the fender. This has to be cut away or bent inward so the fender will slip over the shock body. You may have to slightly elongate the fender mounting holes to move it up a quarter inch or so. Remember that when assembled the headlight bracket/radiator tie bar assembly pulls the fender up and toward the middle a little. Hope this makes sense. George
