MG TD TF 1500 - TD cooling

Hey Folks, this is not so much a question as a tale of frustration! The TD has lived with us since 1999 and during its stay it has always ran hot. I have replaced the water pump, head, head gasket, and added "water wetter" to the coolant. I openned the grill slats, changed the coolant, had the radiater cleaned and "rodded" and blocked off the bypass. It was run without a thermostat and with a modern thermostat in the original housing.

It still ran hot, up ito the second 100 on the dual gage. It always seemed to run hotter than the outside temps by 25 or 30 degrees "C".

Please understand that I am hoping this note helps some other TD/TC owner from so many failed attempts.

Finally, I purchased an original thermostat, used but working, on e-bay. Guess what! The TD now runs at 75 0r 80 degrees all of the time! 10 years of worry and frustration for a ^%*@# thermostat. Hope this helps someone else.

:)

I learned the hard way that gauges do go bad. I had a rebuilt engine for my TD after a catastrophic engine failure. Could not get oil pressure at idle. Pulled the engine twice, had the oil pump rebuilt, Put in a MOSS adjustable valve. Nothing worked. Even purchased a new type oil pressure gauge. Nothing worked.

Then someone here recommended I take the valve cover off with the engine running. It was throwing oil a good 3 inches past the valve train at idle. So I knew it had to be the gauge. Sent it off to be rebuilt and it works fine.

Glad you figured yous out.

good advice, but how can I check the function of a thermostat?
I have simmilar issue, at outside temps of 25 to 30°C the gauge shows 100°C and this with a MGB fan (the 7 blade plastic fan) installed.
Cheers,

Guenter,
take the thermostate out and put it in a pot of water on the stove with a thermometer, check the temp when the thermostate opens....
