MG TD TF 1500 - TD Ammeter
I have an original Lucas ammeter +30-30 which does not respond. I have it connected correctly via the A terminal on the regulator and the starter switch battery connection. Because it failed, I thought I would try another Smiths black faced spare ammeter which I have, however the Smiths ammeter needle only moves slightly. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I am doing wrong or is it possibly the regulator ( early Lucas 9 post type) ? or maybe both ammeters are faulty. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, John...Sydney |

John there is a thread in the archive called "Testing Ammeters" which may help. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Peter, thank you for including the title of the thread. I'm facing the same issue. A very helpful response indeed. Tim TD12524 |

In case you didn't find the thread in the archive, as I didn't, the actual thread name is "Testing Ammeter" (no s at the end). |

Any Ammeter can be tested easily when disconnected from the car wiring: Battery+ to headlight bulb+, bulb- to ammeter, ammeter to battery(-). 1 Headlight bulb should show around 5 amps, 2 in parallel (or use dip and high beam in parallel) around 10 amps. That should be sufficiently precise to check the meter. If it does not move enough, the meter has a problem. Rgds, Mike |
