MG TD TF 1500 - 'T' Series Superchargers

I wonder if there is enough interest in trying to start a thread or webpage concerning the title subject. I have read many of the entries in the BBS Supercharging Threads but they primarily talk about blowers in MGBs or other non-T series MGs. Little to none of the subject matter pertains to our T models. Any interest?

Jim, I would be interested in a supercharger thread. The mg-tabc.org page and the original mgtd page have good info on superchargers but additional detail would be great.
I have been looking at the Moss supercharger and wondering if anyone has done a long term test report and if anyone has posted pictures of the actual steps of installation.

Dennis

Dennis,I have photos of my Marshall-Nordec unit in my TD. Although we can't post pictures on this BBS, I can send you attachments to direct email. I dont have any in-process pictures but the overall installation is fairly straight forward.

Jim, I think it is a great idea. Info is scarce on these blowers and we need to share as much info as possible. Count me in!!

Jim,
I too would like to hear from folks who have installed the new Moss unit...long-term reliabilit...installation problems etc...

Oh, an as an aside, I saw a used (seems to be in good condition)Marshall blower for a TD on ebay yesterday in case anyone is interested.
Robert Dougherty

After fishing around for the M-N blower for sale on ebay that Dennis mentioned, I found it at:

Speaking of the Moss Supercharger - I think I have an email of some photos that Al Moss took of the installation he made in his TC. If you're interested, email me and I'll send them to you.

I sent an email to Mike Plumstead, our Webmaster, asking about the possibility of haviing a separate page like the one set up for and in use by the MGB owners. Perhaps if those TC/TD owners who are interested would do the same, we might convince him.
Jim Merz

As the owner of a Shorrock supercharger TD, I also would be interested.

If any of you have contributions for superchargers that you would like posted at the MGTD/mgtf site please send them my way. Credit glady given.

I have assembled this much so far:

OK. Fire 'em up. TD MKII w/Marshall. Paul

I am currently running a Shorrock on my TD boosting to 6 psi at 6000 rpm. The engine is tuned as per the stage 5 tuning with 10:1 compression, chrome molley crank, high lift cam, ported and polished head with larger MKII valves and Lucas magneto. The engine dyno indicate that engine is putting out 97 hp and chassis dyno runs give me 60 hp on the road. The engine is temperature sensitive and I have pressurized the coolant system to 7 psi and installed a 5 bladed 11 inch flex fan to keep it cool at track speeds.
I should also note that I am running 4:33 gears. The car performs well and out runs most stock MGBs on the track. I am regularly getting top speeds of 95 to 97 mph and find that I am limited by valve float 6700 rpm at 116 mph on the long straight sections. Oil fouling plugs and carbon build up is problem with the waste oil style super charger and this requires constant maintenance to ensure that hot spots to do develope on the pistons. I found this out the hard way and burn out number 2 cylinder on a hard up hill climb. The closed system of the new Moss unit should reduce this oil fouling problem.
I have had a problem maintaining at seal on the pop off valve and I am interseted in what others are doing to keep the valve from weeping oil on to the manifold.

I have not yet received a reply from our webmaster concerning the subject of a separate web page for the "T" Series Superchargers. Perhaps it would help our cause if each of you who are interested would send an email to him, he then might respond to our need.

...Jim...

Great idea, a" T type supercharging thread".

I too, would like to hear from folks who have
installed the new Moss supercharger unit.
Some photos, and as much info as possible.

Greetings.

I finally recieved a reply from our Webmaster, Mike Plumstead, this morning concerning my request for a separate "T" series supercharging page. He suggested that we start a separate thread under the existing Supercharger page.
With this decision, I guess we have our choice of continuing this thread under the T series or perhaps starting an identical thread under the general heading of BBS Supercharging. I think it is more pertinent to keep it here considering the webmaster's decison. What is your vote?
Jim Merz

Jim, I would like to keep it here. Then we pick up infrequent visitors and new arrivals.
I have still found little feedback from Moss customers. The archives show input from Craig Cody, of Moss Motors, who has the prototype on his car. I called Moss to ask about the application on my car -- TD with 1500 displacement, early style head but with large valves -- they have not yet called back. Have become somewhat concerned about my compression ratio impact with supercharger. Am also considering an older "period" supercharger.

I also vote for keeping it here. Someone on the TD/TC site may be stimulated to buy a blower after looking at our comments (or they may be scared away when they see the cost). By the way, anyone out there have some of the original rebuild tools for the shorrock? I would love to see them up close and with drawings if anyone has them. I have the rebuild instructions and installation instructions for the shorrock, anyone interested?
Cheers, Rob
Rob Silverman

OK, if there is no argument against it, we might as well stay here. All the T series owners come here so the superchargers are just another piece of equipment for us to talk about. Thank you all for your opinions.
Jim Merz

Does anyone have or ever seen an Owner's Manual for a Marshall-Nordec? I would gladly pay for copying and mailing costs if anyone has one.
Jim Merz

I have a copy of The Sacred Octagon, Jan/Feb 1983, which has reprints of various articles and ads for superchargers. Includes
Fundamentals of supercharging by Noel Shorrock from Road and Track 1954, Shorrock fitting and servicing instructions, the Arnott installation by WE Blower, an Italmeccanica article and two pages for the Marshall-Nordec supercharger installation for the TC midget -- with a small picture of the supercharger using a TC air filter and a performance data page. Would any of this info help anyone?

My barn save came with a Judson Supercharger ( off car) with all attachments pulleys, lines gauiges etc. Haven't seen any refrenaces to "Judson" any info appreciated specs or comments. Ubit seems to be in good shape spins easily and moves air so appears to be functioning. Looks like PO removed and reapired louver slots on the bonnet sides

I recently sold a 1962 MGA MKII that I put a judson on. The judson guru is a fellow named Geoge Falchi. George rebuilds them so they look better than new and has parts galore. The key to the judson is a well functioning oiler. In the MGA, it must drip at 6 drops per minute wwhich translates to about a quart of marvel mystery oil every 400-500 miles. They are very easy to set up and use, but makes a funny flapping noise when they run that takes a bit to get used to. Somewhere I have the rebuild instructions for them if you are interested. Mail me off-line with your address and I will get it off to you if you wish. Interestingly, it uses a holley (model #1930) carb that was originally developed for a ford tractor, but hey, it has an accelerator pump (unlike the SU) and works great! It even has a transparent fuel bowel so you can see that fuel is getting in properly.

Apparently Moss Motors recently updated their website and I found this link. Answered some of my questions. https://www.mossketeers.com/graphics/products/instructions/150-000.pdf
Still have not heard actual experiences from a customer.
