MG TD TF 1500 - Swivel link adjustment

I'm trying to adjust the swivel link and does anyone know the measurement from the shock-Top link bolt to the A-Frame-Bottom link bolt? When I bottom the swivels on the link how many turns out do I do for initial setting? I have spent hours trying this out and have had know luck. I've referred to the shop manual and am some what unfamiliar with the Queens English.

Well according to the manual you start with them all the way in and then adjust both equally. The way you determine how much is to measure the distance from the center of each tread and then roll the car forward and do the same. If the front is off from the rear than you adjust one side more than the other accordingly.

You might also want to get your steering wheel all aligned where you want it too because this is the way you fine tune that too. Once you get it aligned, you have to adjust the track to make the steering wheel vertical when the car moves straight.

I turn them so that I can insert the tubes, then screw them all the way one way until they bind. I unscrew them and count turns, and set them half-way between. I've newer had a problem.

CJ, are you talking about tie rod ends or suspension? i thought you were talking about suspension, but the answers appear to be tie rod ends. regards, tom

Talking about suspension. Measurement from top bolt to bottom bolt of the swivel pin

CJ - I was answering your question, and not tie rod ends.

The links and tubes have to be centered in the pin grooves. So what I do is screw the links onto the pin roughly so that I can insert the tubes, then go all the way in one direction until the swivel link binds. Then I count turns as I unscrew all the way in the opposite direction until it binds. I set the link in the middle, or half the number of turns.

I have no idea what the length would be - seems to me it would vary with the casting, number of threads, etc. All you want is for the swivel to be centered on the pin groove, as I said.

Tom is correct- center the pin in the groove, ie half way between binding in or out. George

Thanks guys now I understand.

If anyone has the time could please count the threads showing on both upper and bottom link that way it will get me into the ball park. Thanks in advance for any all help.

Don't count threads or measure anything as it does not matter at all whatsoever. Screw each brass outer link on almost all the way down (one side LH thread, other RH)until the hollow pin/tube (#46 on the Moss Motors suspension page)can be pushed through the hole (this will be the relief/groove or what the manual calls the waisted area)in the threads without binding. Screw it all the way one way, then the other until it starts to bind (the tube hits on the threads). Set in the middle with the link aimed the correct way. It only needs to rotate as far as the wheels turn back and forth, so if not exactly in the middle it does not matter.
