MG TD TF 1500 - Supercharger in TF

Every time I see a supercharger for sale, my pulse quickens. There is a nice looking Judson on ebay right now in the TD section.
Will one of you TF guru's please list the makes of blower that will fit in the TF? And, if I installed one, I really don't want to cut any sheetmetal to make it fit.

I would greatly appreciate a list.

I can vouch for the mechanical integrity and great performance of Len's cam on a blown/Judson XPAG engine - this setup is great on my TD. There is a Road & Track picture from 1954 or '55 somewhere in these archives that shows that a Judson will fit inside the bonnet of a TF with no sheet metal surgery.

You're on solid ground with your TF and a Judson set-up, Tom. I'm not at my everyday computer with all my bookmarks, so I can't find the exact picture, but it's online somewhere and also goes with a TF/Judson Road Test that I know is published in the "Road and Track on MG-T" series.

You will note there is a slight cut on the side panel to allow the Judson to fit on a TF. that is the only mod you have to do and it is not visible with the hood down. Man that Judson is really a steal, they normally go for over 3500 bucks. If I had the money, I would buy it now and resell it. George Folchi is the guru on these things, there is really not much to go wrong with them. I loved mine.

You need to think about what you want at the end of the day Tom. Ya want a semi racer like Gene or Dave? or do you want a go down the highway like mine.

You can go period correct with the Judson or Marshalls like Dave did and Tom at one time. Your'e buying used so figure a full rebuild and make sure all the pieces are there. At the end of the day it's an engineering antique and requires a little fussing to keep on the road...such as oilers.

You can go the route Gene and I did with a modern Eaton Blower. Brand new and maintinence free for 100000 miles.
Sold by Tom Lange on this board. Unless things have changed , you will have to purchase a few bits to complete the job.

You can see the cut out for the Judson. No cut out needed there on mine but...

It required the removal of the bonnet brace. You also have to do a few other things, but nothing that can't be reveresed. I did the "fit engineering" for the TF so I can go into greater detail if your interested.

Personnally I wouldn't even consider it without putting in a modern crankshaft.

On the been there done that deal, I would go the modern Eaton if it was me again. The Judson is beautiful, period correct but it is heavy and does put a strain on the Crank, especially if one has an original crank.But as LaVerne can tell ya, there is nothing like the whine when you hit the throttle and go by those A's and B's like they were standin still.
It takes driving a T to a whole new level...

Thank you for your strong support in my moment of dark grief.....
It looked like such a bargain! I did get an email from the seller. He bought it 12 years ago, still in the box. Never installed it. Sounds like it really was "new" but "shopworn".
I will look into the Eaton more, once my tears are dry.

Two terrific articles on blowers for the T-series, one a survey of the blowers once available and the best new one, and an other about one owner's installation of the blower, can be found on-line in TTT2 #7 and in the latest issue.

The blower I am proud to sell is the latest Eaton-type, far superior in every way to the older aluminum castings of 55 years ago, and is shown and described on my web page at mgtrepair.net. As you can read there, this blower develops an honest 45% increase in HP at the wheels (none of this theoretical BHP at the flywheel), with dead-reliable quality and no service for 100,000 miles. It is installed in a wheekend, and requires no cutting. The kit comples complete with everything you need, except for the carb, which is easily available from Joe Curto. TF's are the most work because of their limited access, and only require minor re-location of the wiper motor, the starter switch, and the removal of one hood latch (the button can remain, so it looks unchanged from the outside). With Judson's, for instance, a notch is usually cut from the right side bonnet panel for the blower's nose pulley, which many prefer not to do, understandably.

One happy purchaser wrote that he now happily accelerates up a particular hill in third which he barely struggled up in second, before. When combined with MGA 4.3 gears and a Skyhook 5-speed, it is a virtual Miata. Another wrote that the car is now so responsive he has to re-learn how to drive the car! Not a single purcahser has been disappointed with the blower.

No need to move the wiper motor in mine Tom. Had to remove the bonnet brace as shown due to the fact that it was resting on the pulley. Newest edition may be different. I wouldn't exactly call it a Miata now but certainly much improved. I'd plan on more than a weekend with the TF. To install it requires removal of the bumper,wing, side panel and cross brace.
Things that aren't needed on a TD/TC. And yes I did the dyno to get REAL figures. I'm a happy customer.

Just out of curiosity, what cam did you use? Header? Porting? Overbore? Valve size?

I know your Eaton is way more efficient than my Judson; I'm just trying to get some sense of comparison here.

Basically stock configuration 1250 Dave. If I remember correctly it was .020 over size. 6 lbs of boost although if I ever find the correct V belt I'll put the smaller 8 lb pulley on it. Dizzy is off to Jeff for a recurve as we speak as I got a little valve knock under full throtle up hill on some testing last year. The extra 2 lbs made it a bit quicker.
