MG TD TF 1500 - S.U. petrol pump

I have a client who wishes me to install a transistorised pump in his MG.

A person, whose experience and advice I value, has told me his experiences with the transistorised pump has proved poor as they are particularly prone to failure and he prefers the old types with points.

Has anyone else had this experience?

No, quite the reverse. They seem to run forever.
Could it be that he got the wrong polarity pump?
Or he just got a lemon?
They seem to tolerate long periods of inactivity better than the points type.

G.E. - Are you referring to the all electronic pump pump from Burlen Fuel Systems? If so, your is partially correct. When those pumps where first introduced they were problematic at best. I just had one of those pumps sent to me for repair and to have the polarity reversed. I found that the adjustment of the pump was vary narrow and prone to slipping out of adjustment. I finally resorted to some Loctite on the screw. I believe that Burlen Fuel Systems removed from production and went back to the drawing board and the result is a nearly bullet proof unit. I have had one on our MGB for 5 or 6 years and it has never missed a beat, the same with th one I put on our TD 3 or 4 years ago.

Better than that, they will never refuse to run after lay up because there is nothing in them to film over. The triggering is by a Hall effect sensor and a magnet, and since the magnet is near the center of the end cover so there is no magnetic interference as I experienced with the magnetic reed switch triggering on my design of a number of years ago. Thank you for your comments.

I had heard nothing but good of them and was quite surprised to hear a well known supplier telling my he had had poor service from a number of units.

I'll recommend to my client he has me fit one.

can you give me an idea of the cost of a berlin fuel system and can the novice wrencher install same?

gei - Burlen Fuel Systems is the company who makes all things SU. You can get the all electronic SU fuel pump from any of the local suppliers and it looks the same, sounds the same and installs the same as the OE SU fuel pump that cam in the Car. Cheers - Dave
