MG TD TF 1500 - Stelling & Hellings air cleaners

A question for the group:

I just opened up the air cleaners on my newly purchased 1955 MG-TF - equipped with Stelling & Hellings air cleaners. To my surprise, there was nothing inside each except two metal screens.....no filter element whatsoever!

From what I've read in the various blogs - this may have been a conscious decision by the previous owner, done to allow the SUs to 'breathe' vs. installing elements which might limit the air intake. My research the past few days seems to indicate that there doesn't appear to be an air filter element available for these cleaners. Seems like the only choice is a 'repro' original-type cleaner from Moss Motors.

I'm concerned about the tight clearance with the larger 'standard' air cleaners. Does anyone have positive experience with their S&H air cleaners and if so - where the heck do you find the repleable elements for these little 'gems'. Am I better off facing the inevitable replacement of these chrome pancakes?

THANKS so much for the advice guys!!

I bought a pair of S & H re-pro's a few years ago and they were worthless! They came with a light foam "filter" that was a set up to deteriorate and get sucked into the intake. (anyone want to buy the pair cheap?)
IMHO, the only way to go on the TF is to watch patiently on ebay for a pair of original Vokes to show up, or alternatively buy the very good quality Vokes reproductions that Moss sells. They are in the current Summer 2011 catalogue.

I agree with Tom.

My Stage 3 tuned TF 1500 would choke on th S & H filters, with or without the element. Note: I have 75 HP measured at 5000 RPM, 85 HP projected at 6000 RPM ( I am limiting myself to 5000 for safety reasons.)

The OE TF Volkes filters ate designed to fit, close but no clearance problems.

The Vokes (reproduction?) air cleaner that came from Moss with the Magnacharger had just a wire mesh "strainer."
I fabricated a 9" paper filter assembly to insure a good supply of clean air.

Jim, My repos from Moss came with the proper filters. Did you contact Moss and tell them? I would have. PJ

I run Stelling & Hellings. Never had a problem till yesterday. Just over 4500 RPM she was choking a bit.

Haven't checked my timming yet since this happened.
(Suspect as I did notice a bit of "chatter" in gearshift that was not there before. Car does that if timming is off a bit.)

I don't think my Volks will fit on the car.
My gasket is considerably larger than the ones in Pauls picture. (carb to intake) They are the thick black ones from Moss. I put those on years ago durring the "Not so Great Vapor-Lock War of 2001"

Anybody ever check Harley shop for a K&N filter for these?

David,

Is your car a TD or TF?

My TF came with the "thick black gaskets", (about 3/8 in thick) or are you using the MGB spacers which are much thicker?

The Volkes filters are angled so they fit. The MGA filters are flat backed so they don't fit on a TF. Both have the mesh oiled to help trap dirt.

Paul J. you may want to add the TF spacers (Thick black gaskets) to minimiise Vapor lock.

Don,
TF.
The Volks are the correct ones (angled) they fit on the car prior to my 2001 repaint but don't think they would now.
Thanks for the "3/8" referance...that might be what happened here! (sold me MGB spacers?)
As I recall the old (black ones) were not that thick.
I never throw anything away...might have to dig those out and take a look.
My forward S&H barley fits in there now.

I took a Briggs/270093 air filter - stock code ST102194, sliced it into three, and dispensed with the wire mesh. Fits in the S&H well and seems to work fine.
