MG TD TF 1500 - Steering Wheel Disassembly

I'm trying to remove my steering wheel from the telescoping shaft. I am trying to drive it through the wheel from the upper (threaded) end. It's been stubborn. I've applied some penetrant, but so far it's still stuck. I don't want to hit it too hard for fear of damaging the brittle, old steering wheel hub. Any suggestions as to how to proceed?

The hub appears to be made of aluminum, and it may bonded to the steel shaft as a result of electrolytic corrosion.

For my wheel, I used a small 3-arm puller and positioned the arms between the spoke bosses on the hub with a small patch of leather (from some old working gloves) underneath the claws.
The nut on the steering shaft was slackened to the end of the threads and I also used a suitabel size washer underneath the spindle of the puller.
The wheel came off it's seat with no damage.
As the steering wheel nut is torqued to 5Kp/M, be prepared to use quite some torque on the puller.

I gave it a few more whacks, and damaged the threads a bit with my brass drift. I'll try the puller method as you described.

Corey, have you removed the steering wheel, complete with the splined shaft, from the inner column? If so, just brace the underside of the wheel, put the nut back on the shaft, and ngive it a big whack. It'll come off. Don't try to uncouple the wheel while it's still place. Bud

Bud, the wheel and splined shaft are removed from the steering column. I have the assembly supported from the underside in my vise, and have whacked it without success. I have a 12 ton press (which I should have used in the first place), which I plan to use to press it out).

I failed to intall the nut before I hit the shaft, and I deformed the threads. Is there someone out there who would be willing to loan me a suitable die to allow me to repair the threads?

Thx.

Corey,
It looks like the damage is to the first two threads.
You may be able to clean them up with a "Thread Restoring File" Mine has written on it "60 deg Universal Thread File"
Not a perfect thread match, but when just cleaning up the first thread it works.

When I removed the wheel on my '52 TD I had a similiar problem. Didn't want to come off. So I wound up heating the hub of the steering wheel. Not a lot, in fact i could hold it in my hand comfortably when it came off.
Try using a propane torch at a distance from the hub. The hub is an aluminum casting and will expand faster than the telescoping shaft. The trick will be to keep moving the torch to get the hub warm while not melting anything.

Worked like charm for me.
Cheers,

The wheel came off easily with the press.
