MG TD TF 1500 - steering issue

My TF shutters when I hit a bump. That is, it seems to bump and flutter across a bump or pot hole. The car is realitiveley new to me. What might be the issue? Thanks

hello tom, welcome to the forum. do you have bias ply tires or radial tires? is the fluid level correct in the shocks? when was the last time the shocks were overhauled?

Sounds like shocks, suspension bushings or springs, or a combination of all.

Tom.

Start by doing some investigation. First is look under the front at the rubber bushings in the A arms. You should be able to see rubber where the A arm connects to the front crossmember . You should also see it where the king pin attaches to the A arm and where the shock attaches. Should be solid and about the same thickness all the way around the bushing.

If these look OK. Next, I would push down on the bumper and see how the shock responds. If you see any signs that the shock is leaking, it isn't worth topping them as it will leak out. If you do top them off, leave some space at the top as they need to have a little expansion room.

I would then jack up one wheel. And move it in and out to see if there is any play. If there is, this could be bad ball joint or bearing issues. Do the same for the other side.

This should help identify the general issue. Post your results.

What tyre pressures are you using?

Sounds familiar. rear shock arms may be loose. Common problem. Tighten all such bolts. See archives.

That was one of my problems. My TF was missing the front fender tie bar. You can actually see the fenders vibrate. Runs fender to fender between the radiator and fan.

My TD did the same until I had the front shocks rebuilt and had all of the original ('52) suspension bushings replaced with poly rather than rubber. Drives great now. Rich

Thank you all for the suggestions. I will let you know what I discover.
