MG TD TF 1500 - Start-up Question

Do you engage the clutch when starting a TD? Having owned 3 MGB's since 1974, I was under the impression that MG's should not have the clutch engaged when starting, however, at the GOF I purchased "The Red Car" (great little book!)and in it they start the TD/TC's by engaging the clutch....it seems to be easier to start my TD with the clutch engaged, so I'm assuming this is correct, but I'd like to hear from all the experts!

I wouldn't call myself an expert, but, I start mine with the clutch engaged. Probably force of habit even though I make sure the car is in neutral before I start anyway. I'm not sure if that is good, bad or indifferent.

The TD should be started with the clutch engaged....foot off the pedal. The reason is that it has a carbon throw-out bearing rather than a ball bearing type. The increased friction just makes the starter work harder. This the same reason the idle speed slows down when you disengage the clutch (clutch pedal pushed down).

Jim is correct on all points. Additionally, push the throttle down momemtarily when actuating the strangler. (It really isn't a 'choke') The jets will drop futher if they also don't have to also lever the throttle open. AFter the fuel enrichment is set release the throttle and start.

Although the SU doesn't have a fuel pump like a carb, I have found that very quick and short blips while cranking will also increase the fuel intake for starting. It works because the SU's oil dampener causes the piston to stay down and the increased vacuum of an open throttle plate pulls more fuel out of the jet.

What about cold weather starting?

My habit is to start with the clutch pedal depressed. In fact, in my Toyota truck, the starter is locked out until the clutch pedal is mashed to the floor board. Anyway, during the winter, in both the TF and TC, if I let up off the clutch pedal too soon before things warm up, the trans really puts a load on the motor. I assumed that happened because the gear oil was so cold.
