MG TD TF 1500 - Sreering Wheel Removal

I'm trying to remove a wooden (Moto-Lita style) steering wheel from my '53 TD. The nut came off easily, but the wheel has an aluminum housing that seems to be caught in the threads or the key slot or both.I've tried the usual solvent proudcts (Liquid Wrench, Nut Buster, etc.)with no luck. Any suggestions?

Ira, I had that problem with a TF so a mechanic used a wheel puller and a really heavy hammer and it popped right off. When you loose the halfmoon key out of the keyway let me know and I'll send you another. Dave.

I pulled the telescoping part out of the steering column, and then took the short shaft with the wheel over to my press and was able to press the old steering wheel off.

Tom and Dave,

The suggestion of undoing the telescoping bolt worked. After loosening the bolt, I sprayed more "Liquid Wrench" on the shaft, then pulled the wheel out to its maximum telescopic position. I then gently rapped it from behind with a rubber mallet, then turned the wheel 1/3rd and then rapped it again. On the third position/rap it came loose. I then placed the wheel over a tall bucket, and put the nut back on,then using a large socket-wrench socket as a drift against the wheel nut, rapped the socket with a hammer, to loosen the telescoping shaft. Then I took the wheel nut off and the shaft came right out. I was able to do this without damaging the key.

Reassembly was straightforward, although I used some antiseize. The new wheel looks great, and I plan to restore the old motolita!

Thanks for your advice!
