MG TD TF 1500 - Speaking of 1.5' carburators

With the pancake type aircleaners, what happens with the radiator stay.... Looking at the set up, it looks like the stay and the pancakes will interfere with each other... am I remembering a bend or something to get clearance?

Yes, originally there was a kink in the stay right below the carb.

Gordon, I'm not 100% sure what you mean by the "stay" (I guess the horizontal steel pipe between firewall & radiator?), but I installed the Stellings & Hellings pancake style from Moss a few years ago and nothing got in the way.

I have a set of those things, tried them on the car once and no problem with the rad. stay. did not like the sound they made when I stepped on the gas. Went back to the original oil bath filter.

ed, are you and gordon both talking about TD's or TF's ? on my TD the stay comes from the lower portion of the firewall area upwards at an angle to the radiator. it has a small kink to clear the carb set up. is the TF horizontal? regards, tom

Gordon - I have a MkII intake manifold, it has been modified. (the mounting holes to the carbs have been drilled through) (poorly done), but should be fine for a "driver". If you are interested PM me. (I do not have the air filter canister)

Our TD has 1 1/2 carbs and came with TF air filters. The stay tube was removed due to a clearence issue with the front filter. The TF filters are slanted to clear the hood side pannel.
I replaced the TF filters with hillings (and will put them on our TF which had the hillings filters) to gain clearence for the stay tube.

A lot depends on whether you have the spacers between the intake manifold and the carbs. I had to remove the spacers in order to get the front air cleaner inside the side panel. My diagonal stay bar, from the top of the rad down to the firewall, runs behind the front air cleaner and had to be bent slightly for clearance. This then involved a lengthening adjustment to the top [rad] connection. I agree with Tom Maine about the sound from the carbs when you step on it. I have deeper air cleaners that allow the carbs to breath better, but they won't fit with the side panels on. Let us know when the get the larger carbs installed.

To clarify, I'm a TD, not a TF. No spacers noted when I rebuilt carbs. With the top down and my hearing aid turned off I can't hear the carbs but they sure are shiney!

I'm told the 'stay' for the TD MKII did have a kink in it and a local supplier thinks he has one in his inventory...
The original manifold however would be a better way to go?

Does anyone have a photo of the bulge on the side of a TD MKII cowl? If I add the aluminum manifold, I will need to do something about clearance?

Yes, you will need to cut the right bonnet panel and make a bulge to accommodate the extra 3/4" or so of carburettor and manifold for the 1-1/2" carbs. It's a big opening to fill in the bonnet if you ever decide to go back to the stock set-up. You will also need to bend the radiator support on that side to clear the manifold. What oil bath cleaner will you be using? Remember what Tom McCahill wrote in Mechanix Illustrated in 1952 about the stock 7" oil bath filter, "The bigger... carbs are choked to death with this rig... I found that by removing the air cleaner the car picked up a full 1000 RPM, or about 15 MPH in top gear."

For many years, my TD had aftermarket chrome air cleaners on it. The PO had moved the stay tube lower on the radiator cowel. It works really well and does not mess up the tube by bending it.

The original bracket is used and just turned up and down. Tube hooks to it perfectly.

Here is a picture of where it was.
