MG TD TF 1500 - Some peoples kids.....

"This 1955 mgtf 1500 is the last and most desirable year for the TF. Green with red interior. An excellent original car for only $20,750"

http://www.gullwingmotorcars.com/1955-mg-tf-1500-c-2558.htm?make=ALL&model=ALL&bodytype=ALL&stock=20703&

How can you get that much "wrong" in such a brief description?

David Sheward 55 TF1500 # 7427

I will with hold my comments about Gull Wing Motors. Mom always said if you can't say anything nice......
MG LaVerne

Other than "excellent original", what's wrong with their description, here in its entirety:

"This 1955 MGTF 1500 is the last and most desirable year for the TF. Green with red interior. An excellent original car for only $20,750"

I wonder what the front marker lights came from?

The "excellent original car" implies a lot of things. The car is far from original and far from excellent.
MG LaVerne

LaVerne - Yes, I was going to comment on those 'original' side lights too till I saw your note. VW maybe? FOG

Looking how disgustingly filthy the engine compartment is and those nasty looking tall ram tubes on the carburetors I would consider the engine a core for rebuild only. Add $6-11k to the cost of restoration

Is it really a 55 XPEG, or a 1250 titled in 55?

$21k for a junker. These cars must really be going up in value.

You would have more than $50k invested in this car to make it a nice car, and I doubt you would ever recapture that with so many really great cars available for much less than that fully restored.
Christopher Couper

You'd think they would have at least washed and detailed the car for a better presentation.

Re: dirty car ...
Look at the surroundings. I believe that it is being portrayed as that magic buzz term "barn find".

Don't know if we need to pick the car apart. Some seller's exaggerations in the brief description, but no real lies, unless as Tom noted it is not a 1500. I didn't see "1500" badges or mounting holes.

No real lies?? "Excellent" is a term that can be debated. "Original"..????? Not even close on so many levels. Not enough to work with concerning whether it's a 1500 or not and it would affect the price considerably.

They have been around forever and know full well whats original and what isn't.
MG LaVerne

What they say must be true....look at the fine print under the photos.

Gullwing Motor Cars attempts to provide accurate information on the automobile listed above....

Pic #4 does show an actual air filter assembly for at least one carb.

D McKellar.......Gosh....That's like finding the Candle in a picture of a Wheatfield. You have the 'Eagle Eye' Award!!!

How has a previous owner managed to fit intake trumpets to the carbs? There isn't a TF owner who hasn't shredded their knuckles trying to unbolt the much thinner, original air filters. Also if the original engine has been run without air filters the pistons will be standard size and the bores +20 thou!

I believe it is an XPEG, if you look at the goose neck/thermostat housing, it's the same as a 1500. The carbs also look correct. I think 15K to a high of 17K would be a fair price if the wood is good and the engine doesn't need rebuilding. JMHO. PJ

1250 TF's are the same Paul

MG LaVerne

I question the 1500 because I THINK I can see the 1250 head casting number of 168452 in the last pic but am not sure - it does not look like the 1500's stamped AEF118.

And yes, both 1250 and 1500 TF engines use the same carbs and thermostat. Where's Waldo - or Vokes? I can't see it...

I thought about asking for the vin# to see if it is actually a "1500" (no badges), but the last time I asked this guy a question I got no answer just simply put on the mailing list where this came from.

It does have the rare original "Joanne Fabrics" custom interior....that should be worth something? LOL

I get at least 3 emails a week from them and most are priced the way this one is.
David Sheward 55 TF1500 # 7427

Where do you think I got my rug? LOL
MG LaVerne

Tom.....Between the Seats...just Aft of the Parking Brake Handle.

Mike,
I think that is just the tunnel cover carpet trying to fool us.

What amazes me about these Gullwing people is that they seem to manage to photograph some of their stock in such an UNflattering way, that I never knew was possible. The green TF (more pictures on their web-page) looks just awful there - the grille looks weird, and the front and back views are just plain odd-looking.

And the Morgan DHC - always one of my VERY favorite cars - manages to have one of the least attractive gilles and front ends imaginable. How can such a great car look so awful - not even the condition, but the way the car looks?

And neither of these "55" TFs has ANY 1500 badging...

Well ...I got an answer:
"Thank you for your inquiry. We just purchased this 1955 MGTD 1500 and it's the last and most desirable year for the TF and a very original example. Please find the photos below including the VIN number 20703 and feel free to contact me with further questions at any time."

They did give it a bath and posted more pics.
Definitely not a 1500. Are the bumper over riders off a Singer?

David Sheward 55 TF1500 # 7427

Dave is that their actual plate,? Clearly a 1250, as we suspected. I wonder if the other TF they have for sale is also a 1250?

No idea what the number 20703 means...

Tom, Figured you would be all over this one! The "1955 MGTD 1500" ...very rare indeed! LOL
The plate pic is from the new ones they put up, (minus the barn find dust)...also one of the engine tag. At least the engine tag matches the plate and production records.
