MG TD TF 1500 - Sloppy Brake Pedal

Greetings and salutations!

In rebuilding the brake system on my 50 TD I have encountered a sloppy brake pedal.
It wobbles on the pedal shaft. The tub is on the car and the floor board removed.
Close quarters is an understatement for the crammed space and access in the pedal box.

Any and all advise, warnings or tips regarding a fix would be greatly appreciated. It looks like a nasty job.

Postively the most miserable thing I can thing of doing on a TD. Unless really sloppy, leave it alone. To fix, remove master cylinder, cover plate, clutch cotter pin, clevis pin, greaser and circlip outside the frame. Then slide all inward to gain room, and somehow loosen and remove the nut on the clutch pinch bolt, push the bolt completely out. Pry between the pedals, sliding the clutch pedal to the left. When it is clear of the key (still stuck in the shaft), remove the key from the shaft, which allows the shaft to be slid out from the pedals through the inspection plate opening. (If the key is not removed it jams the brake pedal). Remove brake pedal srping. Replace the bushing in the brake pedal, and probably the shaft/lever also. Important!!!Make sure the new bushing is filed absolutely flush with the steel pedal. If it is not, the shaft will be over to the side and the lever will hit and jam on the edge of the pedal box requiring total disassembly and even more swearing, etc. Same applies to maing sure spacer washers are in the correct place. Reverse to reassemble- it is really difficult but can be done. One TD in town here had the edge and bottom of the pedal box hacksawed, so you can just bend it down for access, and I think another car I have worked on has a round hole in the bottom of the box- makes it much easier to insert the clevis pins, spring, and cotter pins. Hopefully someone else here has an easier approach.

I replaced the bushing last winter,, but did not find it necessary to remove the master cylendar,,, I did this when I had the floor boards removed for trannie replacement, and it still was a few hour job. The time it took was a matter of finding the right tools and view point to get at the key to put it all back together,,,
