MG TD TF 1500 - size of air filters for TF

Restoring 54 mgtf.
It has two different size air filters and cannisters off the SU carbs. Is this original? Should they both be the same size?

The original pancake air filters for the TF were made by Vokes and their name can be seen on the outside of the filters. These were black pressed tin cannisters with a wire mesh filter under a perforated cover ring, the wire mesh being washable and not replaced. Both were angled to the bonnet side and one has a fitting for the breather pipe to the rocker cover. It sounds to me as if you may have aftermarket air filters (which probably do a better job than the originals). Hope this helps.

Cheers, Matthew.

One of the cannisters (and the air filter in it) is about twice as thick as the other cannister. Were both of the cannisters supposed to be the same size?

Since were on the topic of TF air filters, is there any one out there thats using K & N's and if so what part number. I've got the reproduction S & H since the Vokes were long gone and I don't think to much of them. Would like to find something that flows a little better.

Matthew, Any expected updates in the near future on the "Original TF" site?

Both Cannisters are the same thickness, about 1.25 inches. Both are angled to be parallel to the hood side rather than the carb flange,
you may have one MGA filter, it was thicker, with diamond mesh rather than circular holes in the sides.

Moss Motors does not have the MGTF air filter cannisters for sale. I'm convinced that the larger one I have is from an MGA. Does anyone have a source for buying the correct cannister that I am missing?

LaVerne: No updates from me, (I'm not sure if the other contributors are planning any). I am still slowly working on my originality guide chapter.

Cheers, Matthew.

Ed - some of the T Series books have several pictures of these filters in place in period photos of factory fresh cars. You should have no trouble finding a picture of the original setup - the Original T Series by Clausager comes to mind. Try O'Conner Classics for a filter - also check Abingdon Spares.

I have my orginials:
Both black pressed tin Vokes Cannisters are the same thickness, about 1.25 inches. Both are angled to be parallel to the hood side rather than the carb flange, and one has a fitting for the breather pipe to the rocker cover. I run a set of chrome S & H with K&N filters I got from a Harley shop. Actually it was 1 K&N filter that I had to cut in half to fit as they were too "thick" to fit. (Fairly common to see these on older Harleys w/SU's so considerably cheaper there!) The Vokes do come up on ebay from time to time ...but fairly pricey as they are hard to come by!

Led,
When I bought my 54 1250 TF it had some OLD aftermarket filters on it. So, I took some K and N's from an old MGB project and put the back one on with no problems other than soldering a breather pipe on the back. The front I had to cut down to fit. No problems and works fine. Tuned by Colortune and has worked perfectly for the past two years that I have owned it.
